The International Seabed Authority (ISA) \u2014 the body that regulates seabed activities and whose 36-member Council Canada sits on \u2014 is set to meet in July to determine whether the deep sea mining industry will launch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Twenty activists and staff, using LED lights, created a representation of a ghost octopus, a species that lives in the deep sea and lays its eggs on mineral deposits on the seabed. The ghost octopus is one of thousands of species at risk from deep sea mining. While Canada announced an \u201ceffective moratorium\u201d in national waters in February, its position on deep sea mining in areas beyond national jurisdiction has not been made clear. The government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/natural-resources-canada\/news\/2023\/02\/statement-on-seabed-mining.html\">says<\/a> that seabed activities should \u201cdo no harm to the marine environment.\u201d However, a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/may\/25\/more-than-5000-new-species-discovered-in-pacific-deep-sea-mining-hotspot#:~:text=Scientists%20have%20discovered%20more%20than,surveys%20done%20in%20the%20area.\">review<\/a> of environmental surveys conducted in the area targeted for mining found 5,000 previously undiscovered species, and scientists have <a href=\"https:\/\/miningwatch.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/nodule_mining_in_the_pacific_ocean.pdf\">warned<\/a> that deep sea mining would do irreparable harm to the million year old habitats and unique species.<\/p>\n\n<p>Companies vying to mine the deep sea wish to begin submitting mining applications to the ISA this year. The front-runner is a Canadian-registered company, The Metals Company. In July 2021, Nauru, sponsoring state for The Metals Company\u2019s subsidiary Nauru Ocean Resources Inc, triggered the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/depts\/los\/convention_agreements\/texts\/agreement_part_xi\/agreement_part_xi.htm#article1\">two-year rule<\/a>,\u201d a legal mechanism intended to speed up the adoption of deep sea mining regulations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/c86ff110-pto-deep-trouble-report-final-1.pdf\">handful of other corporations<\/a>, largely based in the Global North, have also expressed intention to mine the deep sea, mainly in a large area of the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Mexico called the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ).<\/p>\n\n<p>The next round of talks will take place July 10th to 28th in Jamaica at the International Seabed Authority.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAllowing deep sea mining to be greenlit would fly in the face of global biodiversity protection goals that Canada has supported,\u201d <strong>King said.<\/strong> \u201cThe oceans already bear the brunt of our biodiversity, climate and pollution crises and this is a rare opportunity to prevent further harm before it starts. Canada must work with other countries to ensure no mining plans are approved as a result of the two-year rule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Opposition to deep sea mining is growing amongst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20230310-what-does-the-high-seas-treaty-mean-for-deep-sea-mining\">scientists<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueclimateinitiative.org\/say-no-to-deep-sea-mining\">Pacific Indigenous Peoples<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/deep-sea-mining-just-lost-its-biggest-corporate-backer-1.1899101\">investors<\/a>. Thirteen offices participated in the global day of action.
