Lancaster Sound, known as Tallurutiup Tariunga to local Inuit, is a biological hotspot, home to narwhals, belugas, walruses and polar bears. It hosts an amazing abundance of life that is of critical importance to Inuit, who rely on it for their food, livelihoods and culture. This is the last place on earth anyone should be drilling for oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">For a long time now Inuit have been calling for this area to be protected, but those efforts were blocked by Shell\u2019s permits, which have been there since the 1970s. For the past few years the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), which represents local Inuit,<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/06\/1---QIA.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">has been calling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> for a large National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) overlapping with many of the permits. The federal government under Stephen Harper disagreed, and<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nunatsiaqonline.ca\/stories\/article\/987678_ottawa_proposes_boundaries_for_lancaster\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">proposed a smaller NMCA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> that excluded the Shell permits and some other areas with significant hydrocarbon potential. However back then Shell was refusing to give up the permits without receiving something in return. Outrageously, the minutes also show Shell trying to use the permits as a bargaining chip to circumvent a moratorium on seismic testing in the area, saying it wouldn\u2019t relinquish the permits unless it was allowed to carry out seismic blasting. Seismic blasting is a highly controversial method of oil exploration that poses a significant threat to Arctic wildlife and food security and which<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nunatsiaqonline.ca\/stories\/article\/98789_nunavut_judge_grants_temporary_injunction_against_seismic_testing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\"> local Inuit have strongly opposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"transform: rotate(0rad); display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/06\/ezkzG4pAfHrevXQa8p_XyBRnZsBOpLijRJZip_seyD1E2SuVowyb6WJIweTURWXdylrn5pvVlM6huUMxw-98mECEsKrxDmLPOO_kmdbSmR43-78o6--StmaGZOnuzIYz1eJK629s\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">What\u2019s happened since then to explain Shell\u2019s change of heart? Low oil prices are definitely a factor, but Shell also suffered a<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/sep\/28\/shell-ceases-alaska-arctic-drilling-exploratory-well-oil-gas-disappoints\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">multi-billion dollar defeat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> in the Alaskan Arctic last year, when a global movement for Arctic protection helped bring an end to their misguided efforts to drill for oil there. Shell also pulled out of a recent Arctic exploration licensing round in Norway, and all around the world the oil industry is pulling back from Arctic oil. Companies are slowly starting to realize what French oil giant Total has already acknowledged publicly: offshore Arctic oil drilling is<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/worldnews.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2012\/09\/26\/14107150-environmental-risk-of-drilling-in-arctic-too-high-ceo-of-oil-giant-total-says?lite\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">too risky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> and, in a world increasingly suffering from and taking action on climate change,<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/05\/24\/total-rules-out-arctic-oil-drilling-citing-2c-goal\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">simply a bad investment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">But even more important was<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/blog\/Blogentry\/are-shells-zombie-permits-blocking-arctic-pro\/blog\/56026\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">recent research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> showing that Shell\u2019s permits actually expired decades ago, and<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wwf.ca\/newsroom\/?20761\/Lawsuit-challenges-Shell-oil-permits-in-Arctic-Canada\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">a lawsuit launched by Ecojustice and WWF Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> to have the permits cancelled on those grounds. Faced with the prospect of losing their permits through a court order, Shell tried to make their defeat look as good as possible, and \u2018donate\u2019 the permits instead. Given all this it\u2019s a bit fresh of Shell to claim they\u2019re relinquishing the permits \u2018voluntarily\u2019 to support Arctic protection. In fact the very same day Shell announced it was giving up its Lancaster Sound permits, it was<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2016\/06\/08\/news\/shell-relinquishes-canadian-arctic-drilling-rights\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">expressing interest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> in drilling right next to Lancaster Sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; text-align: center;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; transform: rotate(0.00rad); -webkit-transform: rotate(0.00rad);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/06\/cBfinCNiGOLkM5_4w4WH95RZbjLVGBkSxUGB0_R6vmHg4GTRyWG41OJeq5Yg7gvL8gQD9hlT6xFRLaOdbaT1g2y-AS502BIXzHYYuHA2X_bxgeFjXldgw9nHDGXmm_gxmYMD_NUK\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"515\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666666666666px; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">So while this is the latest in a string of exciting victories for the Arctic, the region is not safe from the oil industry just yet. Oil giants such as Shell are still refusing to accept the reality that Arctic oil has no place in a sustainable economy. But with Shell\u2019s permits out of the way the path is now clear for the government to move forward with permanent, legal protection for Lancaster Sound, to ensure this important area is safe from the threat of oil drilling forever.
