{"id":60004,"date":"2023-07-20T15:44:34","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T19:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=60004"},"modified":"2023-07-20T15:44:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T19:44:38","slug":"why-canadas-support-for-a-deep-sea-mining-moratorium-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/60004\/why-canadas-support-for-a-deep-sea-mining-moratorium-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Canada\u2019s support for a deep sea mining moratorium matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Federal Minister Joly, Minister Wilkinson and Minister Murray made our Monday last week with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2023\/07\/canadas-position-on-seabed-mining-in-areas-beyond-national-jurisdiction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an announcement <\/a>that <strong>Canada supports a moratorium on deep sea mining in international waters.<\/strong> This move was a welcomed step that helps build momentum towards the ultimate goal of Greenpeace\u2019s global campaign \u2014 <strong>to stop deep sea mining before it starts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>But to do that, we first need global governments to agree to a moratorium at the International Seabed Authority<\/strong> \u2014 the UN body responsible for regulating the seabed in the oceans that extend beyond the jurisdiction of any country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Industry is determined to get its hands on the precious metals of the deep sea, trying to push global governments to fast track the completion of mining regulations. And worse yet, a Canada-based mining corporation, The Metals Company, triggered the \u201c2 year rule\u201d with help from Nauru, <strong>which could mean companies could apply for a mining license as soon as this year.<\/strong> We obviously can\u2019t let that happen. We need global governments to say no thanks to the approval of any mining application. And Canada\u2019s statement said just that!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/wxu5XrX4uEHkJsTWHdCBYOffuMvVWxeSYrOr-I-2j105wAMAabGsEHyReBbwaKp_7lQyJgytq6BBvtoD0XysBedp7GH9Q1UGyhGkghsHO5itzQRmcv3L6Z30gmF9s6dD7mKi0pK4jfIivOzK9HKGmYE\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2023\/07\/canadas-position-on-seabed-mining-in-areas-beyond-national-jurisdiction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The statement <\/a>also noted some important points including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>collective responsibility to safeguarding the health and integrity of the oceans&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a precautionary approach that aligns with tackling climate change, pollution and protecting biodiversity and habitats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an adherence to science-based policy and decision-making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensuring the prevention of damage from seabed mining activities to the marine environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prioritizing the protection, conservation and restoration of the global ocean, and its sustainable and equitable use&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/news\/2022\/12\/canada-helps-lead-the-world-to-agreement-on-the-monumental-kunming-montreal-global-biodiversity-framework.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada has made strong global commitments<\/a> to protect and restore marine biodiversity at COP15 and through its support of the Global Ocean Treaty. The deep sea hosts a diversity of life that is unique, fragile and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20230209-how-deep-sea-creatures-are-discovered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mostly unknown to science<\/a>. So to stay true to its pledges, Canada must hold the line and use its position at the ISA to urge more governments to call for a moratorium and prevent yet another threat to ocean ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Will Canada support mining after regulations are created?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>We certainly hope not. But more than hope, <strong>we will continue to remind Canada that if leadership is serious about its commitments, then it will not be possible for it to support mining given what scientists are discovering about the ecosystems that are targeted for mining<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CukI3RgMSjS\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-1536x1536.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-1366x1366.png 1366w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en-340x340.png 340w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2023\/07\/2f17eca6-en.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Deep sea mining could risk Pacific island communities\u2019 livelihoods and jeopardize food security. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2018.00480\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scientists have warned<\/a> that \u201ccommunities that rely on fish stocks for subsistence could be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of seabed mining.\u201d <strong>The mineral deposits that companies seek to mine have <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/manganese-nodule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>taken millions of years to form<\/strong><\/a><strong> and provide an important habitat for marine life<\/strong>. Deep sea ecosystems are fragile, and the unique organisms they house are very slow-growing and therefore much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/deep-sea-organism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less likely to recover from disturbance<\/a>. In May, a review of environmental surveys found that more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(23)00534-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5,000 previously undiscovered species<\/a> make their home in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone \u2014 the main potential mining area.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>So what does this all mean for the oceans?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Nothing yet. But <strong>governments supporting a moratorium can buy ocean life some time<\/strong> while we mobilize and continue to grow the number of voices calling to stop this destructive industry from moving ahead.
