Yet elsewhere, leading corporations have built constructive working relationships with Greenpeace and taken important steps to reform their practices.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Other relationships also began in conflict. But companies who have engaged earnestly attest that Greenpeace can be a supportive and competent ally in helping them tackle their big environmental challenges.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cIt was tough for us at the time when Greenpeace launched reports and attacked us and launched boycotts \u2013 it was very tough for us. It was hard for us to understand and realise what they said might be true, we were slightly in denial. We were trying to justify what we were doing, but looking back without them doing that we wouldn&#8217;t be here. It was important. We publicly say that we thank Greenpeace for their role in helping us change our strategy,\u201d<\/span><span> Aida Greenbury, managing director for sustainability at Asia Pulp &amp; Paper, said<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2014\/mar\/26\/app-deforestation-greenpeace-campaign\"><span> <\/span><span>in a 2013 interview<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Greenbury <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/greenpeace-fortune-500-deforestation-global-warming-2014-6?page=1\"><span>has called Greenpeace<\/span><\/a><span> <\/span><span>\u201cone of the very, very few NGOs I fully respect, because the people behind it really believe in what they are fighting for. We trust they are helping us achieve what we both want to achieve.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cGreenpeace has been a vital partner and valued critical friend in the design and delivery of the Forest Conservation Policy since we announced it in 2013,\u201d<\/span><span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiapulppaper.com\/news-media\/press-releases\/app-welcomes-greenpeaces-decision-fully-re-engage-forest-conservation-policy\"><span>she explained<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"height: 330px; float: right; width: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 10px; background-color: #dcdcdc;\" dir=\"ltr\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/06\/133338_235988.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\"><strong>Greenpeace and Kimberly-Clark\u2019s Suhas Apte celebrate victory. Following Greenpeace\u2019s \u2018Kleercut\u2019 campaign, Kimberly-Clark announces a sustainability policy that places it as an industry leader.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Suhas Apte, former Vice-President of Sustainability for Kimberly-Clark,<\/span><span> the <\/span><span>paper-goods giant that produces Kleenex,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/greenpeace-fortune-500-deforestation-global-warming-2014-6?international=true&amp;r=US&amp;IR=T\"><span> <\/span><span>described Greenpeace<\/span><\/a><span> campaigners as <\/span><span>\u201cvery pragmatic and practical people, and as long as you are willing to listen, their whole intention is to see a change happen\u2026 <\/span><span>as long a they see companies making a genuine effort,<\/span><span> <\/span><span>these guys will bend over backward to help you.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cThey [Greenpeace] are real subject-matter experts.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Bob Langhert, the former Vice President of Sustainability for McDonalds, has likewise<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/greenpeace-mcdonalds-and-power-collaboration\"><span> described in depth<\/span><\/a><span> the constructive way in which Greenpeace engages its corporate counterparts. <\/span><span>\u201cGreenpeace is smart and strategic. Don\u2019t take it as an insult. Accept it as a compliment.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cI give Greenpeace great credit for its openness to change its tactics with us\u2026 Greenpeace\u2019s flexibility and simple approach created progress, and a roadmap of accountability that was easy and cheap.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>The efforts of Greenpeace to engage with McDonald\u2019s were recognized last year by the Keystone Policy Centre, who<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/cargill\/2015\/12\/31\/cargill-keystone-award\/#4c864d35564a\"><span> honoured both organizations<\/span><\/a><span> with the Leadership in Environment Award for <\/span><span>\u201cdemonstrating how we are better and stronger when we work together to find common ground.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Jeff Swartz, CEO of Timberland, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wSizpj-7seg\"><span>credits Greenpeace for his company\u2019s efforts on traceability<\/span><\/a><span> to clean up links between their manufacturing and deforestation in Brazil. \u201c<\/span><span>We\u2019re working really hard on traceability because we got a pull from the consumer\u2026 65,000 Greenpeace people from around the world said \u2018we expect more from you\u2019\u2026 and so I\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Mike Barry, Director of Sustainability for Marks &amp; Spencer, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/olamgroup.com\/blog\/beyond-certification-next-step-sustainable-supply-chains\/\"><span>recognized Greenpeace as a key driving force<\/span><\/a><span> in industry\u2019s voluntary moratorium on soy from areas of recently deforested Brazilian Amazon: <\/span><span>\u201cIn 2006 Greenpeace campaign \u2018Eating up the Amazon\u2019 brought to the world\u2019s attention the devastating impact of soy expansion on the Amazon. \u00a0It showed the connection between the soybean industry and deforestation. Within weeks the main trade associations declared a moratorium on deforestation, pledging not to buy soy produced on lands deforested after June 2006\u2026\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cGreenpeace provided both on the ground technical support and a watchful eye to ensure the integrity of the arrangement was robustly maintained.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cThey\u2019ve been very trustworthy,\u201d<\/span><span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/greenpeace-fortune-500-deforestation-global-warming-2014-6?page=1\"><span>said Bill Weihl, manager of energy efficiency and sustainability at Facebook, of Greenpeace negotiators<\/span><\/a><span>. <\/span><span>\u201cCertainly, when they first started, it was adversarial, but fairly quickly it turned into a productive conversation.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>&#8220;We do not know all the answers, we cannot do it all on our own. We have to play at a different level of co-operation\u2026 In the past we might not have talked to Greenpeace or WWF, but now we are now on the phone with them every week,&#8221;<\/span><span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business\/unilever-ceo-paul-polman-interview\"><span>said Paul Polman, Unilever CEO<\/span><\/a><span> of tackling sustainability targets. <\/span><span>\u201cWho will refuse that journey, who will refuse to jump on the train for a better world?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-7a012b76-bd4c-e4c0-a8a7-0324e2a150d5\"><span>When asked what advice she\u2019d give to a CEO whose company is the target of a Greenpeace campaign, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/greenpeace-fortune-500-deforestation-global-warming-2014-6?page=1\"><span>APP\u2019s Aida Greenbury said<\/span><\/a><span>: \u201c<\/span><span>Embrace your harshest critics\u2026 Tackle your most difficult problems head-on\u2026 It\u2019s not the time when companies can play greenwashing and hope that the issues will be buried. We have the internet now \u2014 full transparency. So stop dancing around with the elephant in the room.
