These new methane regulations can be an initial step toward setting and achieving an ambitious cap on overall greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas sector, on the path to a full, fast and fair phaseout of fossil fuels. Given the consistent evidence of industry under-reporting methane emissions, it will be key to have independent monitoring and testing to ensure companies meet their obligations.”

ENDS

Notes to editor:

Greenpeace Canada’s media backgrounder for COP28 can be found here.

Evidence of under-reporting of methane emissions

Study finds Alberta underestimates methane emissions by 50 per cent

30-40 per cent of methane emissions from Saskatchewan’s oil and gas sector aren’t being reported: study

For more information, please contact:

Claire Le Saux
Communications Officer, Greenpeace Canada
(438) 925-0794

Keith Stewart, senior energy strategist for Greenpeace Canada, responds to the Canadian government’s announcement of draft regulations to reduce oil and gas sector emissions.

"p4_og_title":"Greenpeace Canada reaction to methane regulations announcement","p4_og_description":"Keith Stewart, senior energy strategist for Greenpeace Canada, responds to the Canadian government's announcement of draft regulations to reduce oil and gas sector emissions.","p4_og_image":"https://www.greenpeace.org/static/planet4-canada-stateless/2023/12/3cdf79d5-gp0stoy7m_low_res.jpg","p4_og_image_id":"62232","p4_seo_canonical_url":"","p4_campaign_name":"not set","p4_local_project":"peoplevsoil","p4_basket_name":"Oil","p4_department":"

4
23,32,25],"p4-page-type":[14
post-62229","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-climate","tag-climate","tag-oil","tag-energysolutions","p4-page-type-press-release
["GET
