The activity kicked off the countdown to the next Convention on Biological Diversity negotiations (Nature COP 16), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/article\/colombia-host-cop16\">scheduled<\/a> for this coming October.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The giant inflatable of the wild spotted owl, whose population has dwindled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/may\/26\/northern-spotted-owl-canada-british-columbia-ghosts-aoe\">to one single female<\/a>, serves as a symbol of the current nature crisis and a poignant reminder of the urgent need for new biodiversity legislation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>So far, the Liberal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/06\/3798563c-gp-report-protecting-nature-protecting-life-pages.pdf\">has been remarkably inconsistent<\/a> in its approach to nature protection. Despite having hosted the biggest biodiversity summit of the decade resulting in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/dec\/19\/cop15-historic-deal-signed-to-halt-biodiversity-loss-by-2030-aoe\">\u201chistoric\u201d<\/a> Kunming-Montreal agreement and promising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/62444\/greenpeace-canadas-reaction-to-liberal-governments-commitment-to-new-nature-law-in-2024\/\">new nature legislation<\/a>, the government has consistently failed to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/06\/3798563c-gp-report-protecting-nature-protecting-life-pages.pdf\">its international nature commitments<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>For almost two years now, Greenpeace Canada alongside allies has been calling for a new biodiversity law that will address the nature crisis we are facing both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/news\/how-did-ipbes-estimate-1-million-species-risk-extinction-globalassessment-report\">globally <\/a>and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/species-in-wild-canada-at-risk-1.6667900#:~:text=The%20report%20identified%202%2C253%20species,a%20species%20is%20in%20peril.\">Canada<\/a>. This legislation must ensure the government\u2019s accountability and transparency, center the rights of Indigenous Peoples and restore access to nature for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Public support is strong &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/protect-biodiversity?_ga=2.154331388.534394680.1705928708-738787799.1683573810\">over 60,000 people<\/a> have already signed Greenpeace Canada&#8217;s petition calling for the law\u2019s swift passage. Further, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/55515\/new-polling-over-80-of-canadians-are-worried-about-the-nature-crisis-and-believe-the-federal-government-should-lead-at-cop15\/\">seven in ten people<\/a> across the country declared their support for this legislation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Shane Moffatt, Head of the Food and Nature campaign, Greenpeace Canada, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt has now been over 400 days since Justin Trudeau&#8217;s government committed to passing this important law, and we are still waiting. In the meantime, the nature and wildlife we love across Canada continue to decline. The population of northern spotted owls dropping to just one female in the wild is a tragic testament to this dire crisis.<\/p>\n\n<p>Our message to Prime Minister Trudeau today is clear &#8211; there is no more time to waste.<\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to talk about being green, but we need action. If Justin Trudeau is serious about his nature commitments, he must pass this law before the Nature COP in October.
