2 December 2018 (Toronto, CANADA) \u00a0\u2013 <\/b>The warning that we have just 12 years left to save the climate must now result at COP24 in a bold commitment to accelerated climate action, Greenpeace said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Greenpeace\u2019s head of delegation at COP24 Jens Mattias Clausen said: <\/b>\u201cThe window of opportunity is open \u2013 but only just. Climate science still provides hope, but the time for political talk has long gone. People are clamouring for action. Children are walking out of schools, the vulnerable are calling for justice or launching lawsuits and communities are standing up to defend their forests. Which leader will stand with them and deliver them reasons for hope?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Greenpeace Canada Climate & Energy Senior Strategist, Keith Stewart, said:\u00a0<\/b>\u201cThe politicians gathered in Poland must confront the harsh reality that people are already dying from climate change and that they are the last generation of world leaders who still have the time to act. \u00a0Governments must work in cooperation to achieve a carbon-neutral society. We need fast, bold action to alter the course of history. Bold climate action can deliver a better world where a 100% renewably-powered economy provides clean air and water, jobs and prosperity, and justice for climate impacted communities. We expect nothing less of governments at COP24. There is no time to waste. Within Canada, that takes real climate leadership, not a multi-billion investment in a new tar sands pipeline that will be a stranded asset in the low-carbon world we need to stop climate change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) falls short of our fair-share contribution to the global effort to confront climate change and Canada\u2019s current climate plan <\/span>will not achieve its 2030<\/span><\/a> reduction target.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s COP comes in the wake of clear and urgent warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the UN Environment Programme. [1] In the face of such dire warnings, however, there are glimmers of hope emerging.<\/span><\/p>\n
