{"id":65593,"date":"2024-05-07T12:57:16","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T16:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=65593"},"modified":"2024-07-31T15:51:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-31T19:51:51","slug":"bankers-to-be-grilled-on-greenwash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/65593\/bankers-to-be-grilled-on-greenwash\/","title":{"rendered":"Bankers to be grilled on greenwash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>UPDATE (May 16): The House of Commons Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development has officially summoned bank CEOs to appear before them on June 13<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n<p>The CEOs initially declined the invitation to answer questions related to the committee\u2019s investigation into the environmental and climate impacts of the financial system and want to send a representative of their industry association instead. As an ExxonMobil lobbyist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/caught-on-camera-exxonmobil-lobbyist-touts-anti-climate-actions-1192057\/\">admitted on video<\/a> during an undercover Greenpeace operation, companies send industry association representatives to political hearings to be \u201cwhipping boys\u201d so their CEOs don\u2019t have to answer tough questions.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s great news that the committee has heard our call and summoned the CEOs to testify. Every dollar spent on fossil fuels is a dollar too much.<\/p>\n\n<p>Bank CEOs are amongst the highest paid people in the country and they should be prepared to be held accountable for their decisions.
