And I have an exciting update to share!<\/p>\n\n<p>The Metropolitan Community of Montr\u00e9al (CMM) has now<strong> officially banned the installation of all fossil fuel-powered heating systems and appliances in new small buildings. <\/strong>This landmark regulation will roll out between this October and next April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>What makes this even more remarkable, is that this ban will impact a total of 82 municipalities<strong>,<\/strong> which make up <strong>half of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s population.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>This regulation will help <strong>avoid 500,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions <\/strong>in the CMM area by 2035, <strong>the equivalent of the pollution generated by more than 100,000 motor vehicles<\/strong>,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>explains Patrick Bonin, Climate and Energy campaigner at Greenpeace Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Not only does this decision align with Montr\u00e9al\u2019s climate plan \u2014 which aims to have <strong>zero-emission buildings by 2040<\/strong> \u2014 but it\u2019s a <strong>critical step toward achieving Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a major victory!\u201d exclaims Bonin. \u201cGreenpeace Canada has been working for years to get gas out of buildings, in partnership with our colleagues in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sortonslegaz.com\/\"><strong>Let\u2019s Take Out the Gas!<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>coalition \u2014 which we are a member of in Qu\u00e9bec.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfcaPjY_qQ6AwkCMMk_doblN_MJDFqjnrEdhbDHKwDvLGEfOYwuIma0rjtAw5K2seAr2rhsyEwRut99yUIUsIGYqFIGjg0IzXvIj0sd7JjEwiJR3rGn52lghHzWrZBce1LXfQnuklVx-uVMVisdVPQZXM6d?key=588xgaZIY_5mn-am1YNsQw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u00a9 the Bialons\/ Unsplash.<em> Townhouses on a Plateau-Mont-Royal street, Montr\u00e9al, QC.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>While this is a major win, there\u2019s room for improvement and opportunities to strengthen the ban. For instance, the CMM hasn\u2019t banned the renewal of gas boilers in existing buildings and has allowed renewable natural gas in new big buildings. But we will keep up the pressure <\/p>\n\n<p>Along with the Let\u2019s Take Out the Gas!<strong> <\/strong>coalition, we\u2019re demanding <strong>an immediate shift to energy systems that will minimize gas usage, ban the renewal of gas boilers, and promote a transition to 100% electric solutions complemented by energy efficiency projects.<\/strong> We\u2019re also encouraging the Qu\u00e9bec government to show leadership and support municipal ambitions to phase-out fossil gas in buildings.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe intend to continue campaigning for cities, provinces and the federal government to end the use of gas in buildings. And thanks to the mobilization of our supporters, we can look forward to more victories in the near future!\u201d<\/strong> says Bonin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In fact, a number of cities \u2014 including Vancouver, Pr\u00e9vost, Candiac, and Mont-Saint-Hilaire \u2014 have already adopted similar gas bans, and the CMM\u2019s regulation will encourage other municipalities to do the same.<strong> With each new ban we\u2019re accelerating the transition to cleaner and safer cities, and a greener and better world<\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few months ago, I told you about the City of Montr\u00e9al\u2019s plans to ban natural gas in new buildings in the Fall of 2024.
