As global emissions make the climate warmer and increasingly unpredictable, the effect on wildlife and ecosystems is becoming ever more evident. From insects to birds and mammals to old-growth forests, the Earth\u2019s biodiversity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/climate-issues\/biodiversity#:~:text=The%20risk%20of%20species%20extinction,of%20marine%20and%20coastal%20ecosystems.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facing serious threats<\/a> from a warming world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>July 2024 marked the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news\/earth-just-had-its-warmest-july-on-record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14th consecutive month<\/a> of record-high global temperatures, putting 2024 on track to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/2024-on-track-to-be-the-hottest-year-on-record\/#:~:text=This%20year%20is%20on%20track,Union's%20Copernicus%20Climate%20Change%20Service.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hottest year<\/a> on record. The summer in the Northern hemisphere has been marked by extreme weather, ranging from devastating wildfires, to massive floods and unbearable extreme heat. People and communities are suffering the detrimental impacts of this climate chaos, as homes are lost in destructive fires and lives are put at risk by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/wildfire-smoke-course\/why-wildfire-smoke-health-concern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toxic smoke<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/climate-change-heat-and-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extreme high temperatures<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>All the while, wildlife\u2014the silent and often forgotten victims of extreme weather\u2014are also losing their homes and having their livelihoods destroyed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The fiery toll of wildfires on wildlife<\/h2>\n\n<p>When they sense a wildfire, large and fast animals are often able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/wildfire-alberta-wildlife-forest-1.6858134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">escape<\/a> by running or flying away. On the other hand, smaller or slower animals\u2014frogs, turtles, snakes, small mammals\u2014tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/wildfire-alberta-wildlife-forest-1.6858134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seek refuge<\/a> by hiding, which may lead to them dying during the fire. Should these animals survive the flames, they, like us, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-7159\/3\/1\/9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable<\/a> to heat exhaustion, oxygen deprivation, smoke inhalation, and dehydration\u2014all of which could be fatal.<\/p>\n\n<p>Following a fire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/science-environment\/20231004-canada-s-wildfires-take-devastating-toll-on-wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildlife habitats<\/a> completely change. Entire forests are replaced with small shrubs and grass, leading to loss of food and nesting sites for animals. These drastic ecosystem changes could make species increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9770400\/canada-wildfires-wildlife-extinction\/#:~:text=While%20experts%20don't%20see,species%20increasingly%20vulnerable%2C%20they%20warn.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable<\/a> to extinction\u2014with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320723001210\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already threatened<\/a> species or populations most at risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>While fires are a <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/our-natural-resources\/forests\/insects-disturbances\/why-forests-need-fires-insects-and-diseases\/13081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural part<\/a> of forest ecosystems and allow certain species to thrive, the intensity and frequency of wildfires is rapidly increasing, <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-08-frequency-threatens-ecosystem-stability.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disrupting the stability<\/a> of ecosystems and making it ever more difficult for animals to escape the flames.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>As more fires blaze, we may see more animals wandering into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/wildfire-alberta-wildlife-forest-1.6858134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urban areas<\/a>, fleeing their lost habitats and looking for a place to rest. Hotter temperatures can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildliferescue.ca\/2023\/08\/01\/extreme-weather-effects-on-wildlife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dehydration and heat stress<\/a>, increase the spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/07\/climate\/extreme-weather-invasive-species.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invasive species<\/a>, and disrupt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildliferescue.ca\/2023\/08\/01\/extreme-weather-effects-on-wildlife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hibernation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emagazine.com\/how-are-heat-waves-affecting-wildlife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migration<\/a> patterns\u2014forcing wildlife to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-heat-wave-hurting-wildlife-1.6938575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adapt<\/a> to unfamiliar temperatures, resources and habitats.<\/p>\n\n<p>Extreme temperatures have been identified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.1913007117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">culprit<\/a> behind the growing number of local species extinctions. Should the planet continue to warm at a severe rate, up to one in three species could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.1913007117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a> over the next 50 years. Insects are particularly at risk\u2014the number of areas occupied by native bumblebees in North America has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aax8591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped by 46%<\/a> relative to surveys taken between 1901 and 1974.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can we do?<\/h2>\n\n<p>While communities, wildlife and entire ecosystems face the brunt of the climate crisis, the fossil fuel industry reaps billions in profits and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2024\/05\/03\/news\/canada-oil-and-gas-emissions-continue-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expands oil production<\/a>. By continuing to exploit coal, oil and gas, they are inflaming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/causes-effects-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extreme weather<\/a>, making climate disasters <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/climate-change\/extreme-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more frequent and more severe<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Later is too late\u2014communities are burning and animals are dying, and it is time for fossil fuel polluters to pay for fuelling this climate chaos. We are demanding they pay into a new <em>Climate Recovery Fund\u2014<\/em>a fund which would be used to repair, rebuild, and adapt to future climate change impacts. By financially supporting communities and local governments facing the brunt of the crisis, we can work towards building resilient communities and ecosystems in the face of climate disasters.<\/p>\n\n<p>The future is in our hands.
