{"id":67587,"date":"2024-10-31T13:38:40","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T17:38:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=67587"},"modified":"2025-07-16T14:40:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T18:40:13","slug":"big-step-forward-for-the-bonaire-residents-demanding-climate-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/67587\/big-step-forward-for-the-bonaire-residents-demanding-climate-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Big step forward for the Bonaire residents demanding climate justice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What would you do if you knew part of the place you call home will be lost to sea level rise by 2050?<\/p>\n\n<p>Residents from the Caribbean island of Bonaire are currently facing such a question, as rising seas caused by climate change threaten to permanently submerge parts of their homeland.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>So here\u2019s what they\u2019re doing about it. Last year, eight residents teamed up with Greenpeace Netherlands<strong> to sue the Dutch government for violating human rights due to their insufficient climate action.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>And we have a BIG update: The court has just agreed that <strong>the case can proceed <\/strong>\u2014 which is <strong>an incredible step forward for climate justice!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Bonaire, an island in the southern Caribbean \u2014 which became a Dutch State in 1636 as a result of colonial struggles \u2014 is being heavily impacted by the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n<p>A study commissioned by Greenpeace has shown that the<strong> island\u2019s residents are facing serious risks due to rising sea levels, increased heat, and coral degradation<\/strong>. If global carbon emissions are not significantly lowered, <strong>a fifth of Bonaire could be lost to the sea by the end of this century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Caribbean Netherlands has been forgotten for too long,&#8221; says Danique Martis, a social worker and one of the plaintiffs. <strong>There are plans in place to protect the European Netherlands against sea-level rise and other consequences of the climate crisis, but for Bonaire this is not yet the case.<\/strong> It saddens me to see how, despite knowing their responsibility,<strong> the Dutch government has chosen to push our right to safety aside.<\/strong> For this reason, we are going to the court, so they have no choice but to act.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2024\/10\/bb5a2a5b-gp0stw7ay_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2024\/10\/bb5a2a5b-gp0stw7ay_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2024\/10\/bb5a2a5b-gp0stw7ay_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2024\/10\/bb5a2a5b-gp0stw7ay_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2024\/10\/bb5a2a5b-gp0stw7ay_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2024\/10\/bb5a2a5b-gp0stw7ay_medium-res-with-credit-line-1200px.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Residents of the Dutch Caribbean island Bonaire launched a legal case with Greenpeace Netherlands against the Dutch government to protect Bonaire against climate change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Only a few weeks ago, several dozen people \u2014 including representatives of the Caribbean diaspora and the climate movement \u2014<strong> held a symbolic protest in The Hague, the capital of the Netherlands. <\/strong>The group marched from the Prime Minister\u2019s office to the District Court, where the summons were delivered, <strong>amplifying the voices of the Bonaire residents who are calling for action.<\/strong> [1]<\/p>\n\n<p>We\u2019re excited for what\u2019s to come in this case, and will keep you updated as it progresses.
