14th December, 2018 (Vancouver) <\/b>\u2013 In response to the <\/span>Alberta agreement<\/span><\/a> between Indigenous, federal and provincial governments as well as industry to propose a Biodiversity Stewardship Area (BSA) that will designate a wildland provincial park and conserve more than 166,000 hectares of Boreal forest, Eduardo Sousa, senior forest campaigner at Greenpeace Canada said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time when humanity has wiped out more than half of animal populations and destroyed intact Boreal forests, securing more protection for these threatened areas as well as caribou is desperately needed. This protection will also help to address the serious ecological problems that Wood Buffalo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is facing right now and will help Canada in achieving its global biodiversity goal. Finally, this announcement signals an important collaboration between all the various governments that will hopefully help the cultural survival for First Nations and Metis Peoples and their governments in their territories of the region.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

This agreement will add to the more than 6.7 million hectares of contiguous Boreal forest protected in Alberta earlier this year. <\/span><\/p>\n
