{"id":69031,"date":"2025-03-25T14:04:35","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T18:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=69031"},"modified":"2025-03-27T18:04:39","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T22:04:39","slug":"jury-finds-greenpeace-entities-liable-for-more-than-660-million-in-energy-transfers-baseless-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/69031\/jury-finds-greenpeace-entities-liable-for-more-than-660-million-in-energy-transfers-baseless-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury finds Greenpeace entities liable for more than $660 million in Energy Transfer\u2019s baseless lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A $660 million verdict is not enough to silence our movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>On March 19th, a jury in North Dakota delivered the verdict in Energy Transfer\u2019s meritless lawsuit against Greenpeace entities in the US and Greenpeace International. <strong>The jury found the Greenpeace entities liable for more than $660 million USD in damages.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Energy Transfer, a multi-billion dollar oil and gas company led by a Trump donor, is falsely claiming that Greenpeace orchestrated the Indigenous-led protests against its Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016-2017.<\/p>\n\n<p>To give a sense of scale, <strong>$660 million USD is more than double the entire operating budget of Greenpeace Canada for our entire 54 year history. <\/strong>By contrast, it\u2019s equal to about 4% of Energy Transfer\u2019s 2024 earnings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The impact of this verdict would go far beyond Greenpeace or the environmental movement alone. Marty Garbus, an independent trial monitor, said: \u201cThis is one of the most important cases in American history. The law that can come down in this case can affect any demonstration, religious or political.&#8221; <strong>This meritless lawsuit was designed to make people afraid to participate in protests, for fear of being sued.<\/strong> We cannot let that happen \u2013 especially with all that\u2019s happening in the world today. In fact, Trump even owned shares in Energy Transfer Partners worth between $500,000 and $1 million, according to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-stat\/graphics\/politics\/trump-archive\/docs\/trump-fec-financial-disclosure-2015.pdf\">2015 financial disclosure filing<\/a>. Within days of his 2017 inauguration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/trump-signs-orders-advancing-keystone-dakota-pipelines\/\"><strong>Trump signed an executive order<\/strong><\/a><strong> clearing the way for the completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s next for Greenpeace?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>There is still hope. <\/strong>This case will be appealed and Greenpeace International has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/about\/legal\/dutch-anti-slapp-lawsuit\/\">launched a lawsuit<\/a> against the company in the Netherlands to counteract this abusive lawsuit in the US.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does Energy Transfer\u2019s lawsuit mean for Greenpeace Canada?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Here in Canada, we\u2019re facing additional threats of our own: Trump trying to make Canada the 51st state, and Pierre Poilievre running for Prime Minister. Poilievre\u2019s anti-climate agenda <strong>echoes Trump\u2019s<\/strong>; he wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmog.com\/2024\/05\/17\/pierre-poilievre-voted-against-environment-and-climate-400-times-records-show\/\">fastrack major oil and gas projects, and eliminate environmental protection policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Imagine a world in which Trump and Poilievre are in power and there is no Greenpeace USA.<\/strong> A world in which the precedent set by this devastating trial outcome emboldens big polluters to sue all those who dare to stand up to them \u2014&nbsp; in the USA, in Canada, and beyond. A world in which ordinary people are afraid to attend protests, for fear of the repercussions. We cannot let this happen.<\/p>\n\n<p>We have to show companies like Energy Transfer that we will not be silenced \u2014 and one of the best ways to do that is to donate.
