{"id":69091,"date":"2025-03-31T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=69091"},"modified":"2025-03-27T19:22:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T23:22:23","slug":"greenpeace-calls-on-bmo-to-end-partnership-with-capp-over-oil-lobbys-election-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/69091\/greenpeace-calls-on-bmo-to-end-partnership-with-capp-over-oil-lobbys-election-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace calls on BMO to end partnership with CAPP over oil lobby\u2019s election platform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>TORONTO \u2013<\/strong> Greenpeace Canada is calling on BMO to end its partnership with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) in response to the oil lobby\u2019s publication of a 2025 federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capp.ca\/en\/unleashing-canadas-energy-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election platform<\/a> that calls for a major rollback of environmental legislation and an end to all federal regulation of emissions reduction and carbon pricing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe oil lobby is no longer even pretending to care about the climate, so BMO needs to pick a side,\u201d said Keith Stewart, senior energy strategist with Greenpeace Canada. \u201cBMO can\u2019t claim to be committed to climate action while colluding with an oil lobby group that is calling for the utter destruction of Canada\u2019s national climate plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>BMO recently changed its public climate commitment from \u201cWe are committed to building a sustainable future and advancing a path toward a net-zero world\u201d [1] to a <a href=\"https:\/\/our-impact.bmo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new version<\/a>: \u201cto be our clients\u2019 lead partner in the transition to a net-zero world, enabling innovative climate solutions and supporting sustainable outcomes in our role as a financial institution.\u201d In either case, the oil lobby group\u2019s recently released election platform (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capp.ca\/en\/unleashing-canadas-energy-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAPP\u2019s 2025 Federal Policy Priorities: How our next government can leverage the energy sector for all Canadians<\/a>) takes the world in the opposite direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>CAPP\u2019s election platform calls for Canada\u2019s next federal government to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abandon all national emissions reduction policy and carbon pricing (i.e. \u201cletting provinces take the lead on any emissions reductions policies and pricing systems in their jurisdictions\u201d);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weaken national greenhouse gas reduction targets (i.e. \u201caligning our emissions reduction goals with our partners and other allied major oil and gas producing nations\u201d);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeal the Impact Assessment Act (which for the first time made climate change a consideration in energy project approvals) and the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act (which bans large oil tankers along British Columbia\u2019s north coast);\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abandon the proposed oil and gas emissions cap;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove the anti-greenwashing provisions of the revised Competition Act.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>CEOs from 14 of the largest oil and gas companies subsequently published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcenergy.com\/newsroom\/statements\/2025-03-19-build-canada-now-an-urgent-plan-to-strengthen-economic-sovereignty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open letter<\/a> repeating many of these demands (with an even more specific call for abandoning the industrial carbon price). In response to media questioning, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-trade-war-federal-election-energy-ceos-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> that implementing their recommendations would make it harder for Canada to meet its greenhouse-gas emissions targets.<\/p>\n\n<p>BMO became the sponsor of CAPP\u2019s annual Energy Symposium in 2023, after Scotiabank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/scotiabank-leaves-capp-oil-and-gas-lobby-group-1.6449320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped its sponsorship<\/a> of the event (and its membership in CAPP) after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2022\/04\/06\/news\/greenpeace-throws-scotiabank-climate-action-party-shareholders-reject-advisory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greenpeace protest <\/a>during their AGM.
