Ugh.<br><br>&gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XbWKHpCiH8\">https:\/\/t.co\/XbWKHpCiH8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ohlb3ehvNs\">pic.twitter.com\/ohlb3ehvNs<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Greenpeace Canada (@GreenpeaceCA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenpeaceCA\/status\/1935752010638258273?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 19, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>The minority Liberal government \u2013 with the<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/liberals-to-pass-major-projects-bill-this-week-with-conservative-support\"> support of the Conservatives<\/a> &#8211; are bypassing regular Parliamentary procedures to rubberstamp legislation that fast-tracks vaguely-defined \u201cnational interest\u201d projects. Bill C-5 would allow Cabinet to sidestep long-standing environmental protections, silence communities, and violate Indigenous rights in order to ram projects through to the benefit of multi-billion dollar corporations.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even a Liberal MP is <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/liberal-mps-express-worries-about-major-projects-bill\">saying<\/a> that his government \u201cis proposing to shut down democratic debate, curtail committee scrutiny and jam the bill through the legislature\u201d in a way that would make former prime minister Stephen Harper \u201cblush.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace supports fast tracking climate solutions, but in its current form this bill will only accelerate conflicts (see our assessment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/70153\/breaking-down-the-building-canada-act-fast-track-climate-solutions-not-fossil-fuels\/\">here<\/a>). We\u2019re supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/ecojustice.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-06-16-Priority-amendments-for-Bill-C-5-Part-2.pdf\">proposed amendments<\/a> to the bill and some measures to increase transparency and accountability were adopted, but the bill is still deeply flawed so we need to keep the pressure on.
