The expedition, known as the Deep Arctic Expedition, is a first of its kind in Greenpeace history. Alongside expert deep sea scientists, Greenpeace will launch a scientifically advanced vessel into the deep sea to explore the deepest parts of the ocean, collecting data and researching the biodiversity of some of the world’s most ancient ecosystems. The journey will be livestreamed to the public, made available for free viewing online, broadcasting from depths down to 3000 metres.

This expedition comes at a critical time when the deep sea is facing the imminent threat of deep sea mining. Currently, Canadian deep sea mining firm The Metals Company (TMC), headquartered in Vancouver, is attempting to unilaterally mine the ocean for profit, bypassing international laws and working with the Trump Administration to support this pursuit. In March 2026, Greenpeace Canada’s investigative report on TMC, Claiming the Commons: The Legal Quagmire of The Metals Company, revealed the company’s circumvention of international laws by using the United States permitting process to secure licenses and permits to engage in extractive activities in the deep seabed. As of May 1, 2026, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Home (NOAA), a US government body that TMC is using to attempt to secure mining licences, determined their mining application was in full compliance with TMC stating they estimate being granted permits to begin deep sea mining by March 2027.

Sheila Sampath, Head of the Nature and Biodiversity Program at Greenpeace Canada, said:

“This is a defining moment for ocean protection. As we explore the deep sea in real time, we are bringing the public face-to-face with ecosystems of extraordinary beauty and fragility at a moment when they are threatened by large-scale extraction. Deep sea mining is moving faster than the science and putting irreplaceable biodiversity on the line. Canada cannot stand by while its companies push into legal grey zones that put the global ocean at risk.”

Home to ancient ecosystems and vulnerable marine life, the deep sea remains one of the least understood regions on Earth—and one that is increasingly threatened by proposed deep sea mining.

Through the month-long Deep Arctic Expedition, Greenpeace and collaborating scientists will give the public a rare window into these fragile deep sea ecosystems through livestreamed exploration and scientific research from depths never before researched and captured on film. The mission comes at a pivotal moment for ocean protection, as opposition to deep sea mining continues to grow among scientists, Indigenous communities, businesses, financial institutions and civil society organizations worldwide. The expedition will conclude in Bergen, Norway, in early June, where the initial findings will be shared with the public and policy-makers.

ENDS

Note to editors:

The Greenpeace Deep Arctic Expedition planned dates are May 8, 2026, to June 5, 2026.
