Greenpeace Canada is saddened by Steven Guilbeault\u2019s announcement that he will be resigning from the federal government later this summer. As one of Canada\u2019s strongest voices for the environment, his resignation signals a deep loss of political ambition on the part of Canada, towards our commitments to defend land and water, and take action on climate change. Steven\u2019s departure underlines what we\u2019ve been saying for months: Prime Minister Carney made election promises to protect nature and fight climate change, but over the last year he has rammed through an “extraction-first, nature and people last” approach, prioritizing profit, further harming marginalized communities, and forcing political allies to make tough decisions.<\/p>\n\n
Carney can’t claim to protect nature with one hand and destroy it with the other. The inconsistency demonstrated by the federal government is ringing alarm bells from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Steven Guilbeault’s decision to step down only underlines this.<\/p>\n\n
We are grateful to Steven for his decades of work on the environment, and we will be actively watching his next moves. Thank you, Steven. We look forward to working with you in whatever you do next.<\/p>\n\n
