The core of their argument was:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil companies <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played a significant and shameful role in disseminating misinformation that casts doubt on the science of a warming Earth, and the link between carbon emissions and climate change. And they continue to bolster those who argue that dramatic action isn\u2019t urgently needed.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here\u2019s the rub: plenty of politicians in Canada (and elsewhere) happily do the very same thing every day.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments have long known that burning fossil fuels comes with a cost that future generations may not be able to survive, let alone pay.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no question oil companies produce a product that\u2019s harmful to the environment. But it\u2019s up to government to wean us off their products by supporting clean alternatives to the way we transport ourselves and our goods and heat and light our homes and businesses.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our elected leaders aren\u2019t doing that quickly or comprehensively enough. Worse, some are actively undermining the efforts of those who are trying to make progress.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These would be excellent points except for three things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>We don\u2019t have to choose between suing the polluters<\/strong> who have delayed action on climate change <strong>and pressuring the politicians<\/strong> who have allowed those delays.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>It is only fair that big polluters be held accountable<\/strong> for running decades-long campaigns to delay action on climate change that has resulted in greater damages, and the courts are the way we do that. The history of tobacco, asbestos and other hazardous products shows that those who mislead the public, the market, or the government about the risks of their products, or the availability of safer alternatives, can face substantial legal liability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Litigation and political pressure work best when done in concert<\/strong>. For example, the <i>Star<\/i> editorial correctly notes that some U.S. oil companies are finally supporting carbon pricing in theory (although they are still<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-carbon\/washington-state-carbon-tax-poised-to-fail-after-big-oil-campaign-idUSKCN1NC1A9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> pouring millions into campaigns against specific carbon taxes<\/a>). What the editorial misses, however, is that Big Oil\u2019s support for a carbon tax<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/10\/18\/17983866\/climate-change-exxon-carbon-tax-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> is contingent on these companies being granted immunity from climate liability lawsuits<\/a> like the ones launched by New York, San Francisco and Baltimore.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil companies\u2019 decades-long campaign to cast doubt on climate science in order to delay action by governments \u2014 even as they were<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journalism.columbia.edu\/two-year-long-investigation-what-exxon-knew-about-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redesigning their own operations to protect against anticipated global warming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 was modeled on the earlier campaign by tobacco companies to deny that smoking caused cancer (read<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merchantsofdoubt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merchants of Doubt<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a detailed history). The climate denial campaigns even employed<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/tobacco-and-oil-industries-used-same-researchers-to-sway-public1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the same PR company and \u2018experts\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as tobacco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Tobacco ultimately had to<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/tobacco\/msa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> pay over US $200 billion<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to cover some of the health care costs of treating smokers in the U.S. and are currently<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca\/english\/tobacco_litigation.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being sued for CAD $50 billion in Ontario<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tobacco companies also had their ability to advertise and lobby governments severely restricted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace believes that <strong>Big Oil should face comparable consequences for their actions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hard truth is that we will all pay a heavy price for climate change, both in damages and to rebuild infrastructure to better protect ourselves against extreme weather. No one is saying that oil companies should pay all of the costs \u2014 Councillor Layton\u2019s motion simply asks staff to assess what those costs are to Toronto, and to present City Council with options for making big polluters pay their fair share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2YPfyKF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <b>Ask your Toronto City Councilor to support Mike Layton\u2019s motion on April 25th. <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
