10 septembre 2018, Matagami, Qu\u00e9bec \u2013 Aujourd\u2019hui la Nation Crie de Waswanipi, accompagn\u00e9es par des repr\u00e9sentants des communaut\u00e9s cries environnantes et de Greenpeace Canada, manifeste au kilom\u00e8tre 105 de la route Baie James pour s\u2019opposer \u00e0 l\u2019exploitation foresti\u00e8re de la for\u00eat Broadback.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abC\u2019est dans les droits des Cris de Waswanipi de prot\u00e9ger leur derni\u00e8re for\u00eat intacte. De telles for\u00eats sont d\u2019ailleurs notre police d\u2019assurance dans la lutte aux changements climatiques. Ce serait une erreur et une perte des plus s\u00e9rieuse d\u2019exploiter cet endroit si majestueux. Prot\u00e9ger la for\u00eat Broadback devrait \u00eatre une priorit\u00e9 absolue pour le prochain gouvernement du Qu\u00e9bec\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Olivier Kolmel, charg\u00e9 de la campagne for\u00eat chez Greenpeace Canada, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de Matagami.<\/span><\/p>\n

La r\u00e9gion a une signification culturelle irrempla\u00e7able pour les Cris de Waswanipi, qui ont chass\u00e9 et pi\u00e9g\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion pendant d’innombrables g\u00e9n\u00e9rations. La for\u00eat stock de grandes quantit\u00e9s de carbone, abrite des esp\u00e8ces menac\u00e9es comme le caribou forestier et est une source importante d\u2019eau potable.<\/span><\/p>\n

La communaut\u00e9 tente de prot\u00e9ger la for\u00eat Broadback depuis 2011. Malgr\u00e9 les promesses de n\u00e9gociation d\u2019un accord, le gouvernement du Qu\u00e9bec a publi\u00e9 cette ann\u00e9e un <\/span>plan quinquennal d\u2019am\u00e9nagement forestier int\u00e9gr\u00e9<\/span><\/a> ouvrant la zone \u00e0 l’exploitation foresti\u00e8re. Selon des membres de la communaut\u00e9, des travaux ont r\u00e9cemment d\u00e9but\u00e9 sur une route foresti\u00e8re qui m\u00e8ne \u00e0 la zone prot\u00e9g\u00e9e propos\u00e9e par les Cris de Waswanipi, d\u00e9clenchant les manifestations de ce lundi.<\/span><\/p>\n
