{"id":11858,"date":"2020-10-19T13:00:23","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T11:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/czech\/?p=11858"},"modified":"2021-12-01T13:31:13","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:31:13","slug":"czech-coal-commission-contemplates-self-defeating-coal-phase-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/czech\/tiskova-zprava\/11858\/czech-coal-commission-contemplates-self-defeating-coal-phase-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Czech coal commission contemplates self-defeating coal phase out"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Czech government is in danger of looking out of touch at the upcoming EU council meeting, as its coal commission is homing in on a post-2030 phase out that would undermine Czech prime minister Andrej Babi\u0161\u2019s recent commitment to increasing the EU\u2019s climate target to 55 percent by 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Like its German counterpart, the Czech coal commission is exploring several coal phase out scenarios, encompassing 2033, 2038, and 2043. <a href=\"https:\/\/frankbold.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publikace\/czech_grid_without_coal_by_2030_fin_0.pdf\">Studies show that the country can achieve a 2030 transition<\/a> from coal to renewables, and that there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hnutiduha.cz\/sites\/default\/files\/publikace\/2020\/06\/vytahnute_uhli_focus_pro_hnuti_duha_energie_2020.pdf\">overwhelming public support to do so<\/a>. (c) Greenpeace &#8211; Ibra Ibrahimovi\u010d<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 (c) Greenpeace &#8211; Ibra Ibrahimovi\u010d<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Czech coal commission still doesn\u2019t have all the expert materials needed to decide about the coal phase out, yet Minister Havl\u00ed\u010dek is preemptively calling for 2038 to be the default phase out date decision,\u201d said Ji\u0159\u00ed Ko\u017eelouh from Hnut\u00ed DUHA (Friends of the Earth Czech Republic), a member of the coal commission for the Green Circle &#8211; association of Czech environmental NGOs. \u201cThis is undemocratic pandering to the coal industry, and an embarrassment for Prime Minister Babi\u0161, all so \u010cEZ and local coal barons can delay the inevitable closure of their polluting plants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>To highlight the influence of industry on the Coal commission process, environmental organisations Hnut\u00ed DUHA (Friends of the Earth Czech Republic) and Greenpeace today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-czech-republic-stateless\/2020\/10\/da643c2c-kill_list_hnuti_duha_2020.pdf\">published a coal plant shut-down list<\/a>, which was not created by the coal commission itself in the past due to opposition from coal utilities. Workers and communities will ultimately pay the price.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cA decision to phase out coal will be a tremendous leap forward for the Czech Republic, but its coal commission is in danger of making the same mistakes as its German counterpart,\u201d said Mahi Sideridou, Europe Beyond Coal managing director. \u201cThe coal industry is collapsing all across Europe, and improvements to EU climate policies underline that a 2030 coal phase is now unavoidable. Germany\u2019s coal phase date is already being outpaced by reality, and should serve as a warning, not a model.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
