Burning coal is the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/en\/campaigns\/climate-change\/coal\/Coal-fuels-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">biggest single source of carbon dioxide emissions<\/a>\u00a0from human activity, and mining it also releases the potent greenhouse gas methane. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n<p>So why is King Coal no longer the energy of the future?<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/c06062c0-c06062c0-global-shift.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0New research from Greenpeace and CoalSwarm\u00a0<\/a>shows why. <\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<div>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">1. More governments are completely ditching coal than ever before!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1107403\/the-world-is-abandoning-coal-fired-electricity-at-an-astonishing-pace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">23 countries, states and cities will have either phased out coal-fired power plants<\/a>\u00a0or set a timeline to do so by 2030. Before 2014, no major jurisdiction had completely phased out coal. The capital cities of China and India are going coal free!<\/h3>\n<p>Three of the G7 economies have decided to phase out coal \u2013 with Italy looking like it might also be phasing coal out soon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/01e7bd91-01e7bd91-139196_250220.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">3. 25% of companies in the coal business have completely pulled out!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/endcoal.org\/2017\/10\/coal-phase-out-first-global-survey-of-companies-and-political-entities-exiting-coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This represents nearly 370 large coal-fired power plants<\/a>\u00a0shut down or not built in the first place \u2013 enough to power around six United Kingdoms, and equivalent to nearly half a trillion US dollars in assets retired or not developed.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/72243722-72243722-139193_250214.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Greenpeace activists climb the cooling tower of the largest and dirtiest lignite power station in Greece, in 2015.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">4.
