This year promises to be even bigger\u2026 and that\u2019s bad news for the environment.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"events-box big-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\"><a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/^FAC216AD6E107FB1E7DAA77C692F2C3EA4CFB612475E993C7A^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_epiEntryContent_ctl00_ctl02_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/ReSizes\/Large\/PageFiles\/299371\/%5EFAC216AD6E107FB1E7DAA77C692F2C3EA4CFB612475E993C7A%5Epimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"hidden\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">What began as a tongue-in cheek poke at China\u2019s couple-obsessed culture has morphed into the single biggest online shopping event in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Singles\u2019 Day\u2019 is almost upon us: a frenzied 24-hour shopping festival that generates bigger sales \u2013 and bigger volumes of waste \u2013 than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techinasia.com\/china-singles-day-versus-black-friday-cyber-monday-sales\"> Black Friday and Cyber Monday<\/a> put together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So named for the symbolic loneliness of the date 11.11, the holiday was started by students in Nanjing University<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-alibaba-made-143-billion-on-singles-day-2015-11\"> in the early 90s<\/a> as an excuse to celebrate single life and treat themselves to gifts. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It remained fairly small until 2009 when executives at Alibaba, China\u2019s biggest online shopping platform, saw an opportunity and decided to stage a 24 hour-only event, slashing prices on everything from phones and clothing, to electronics, furniture and much more. It was a roaring success.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Singles\u2019 Day sales have mushroomed into a feverish buy-a-thon that is unrivaled globally. China\u2019s online shopping population more than tripled in the past five years to 410 million and their pockets are deep: entering its eighth year, Alibaba\u2019s Singles Day sales are predicted to hit USD20 Billion \u2013 an increase of 40% from last year\u2019s record-breaking sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Daniel Craig of James Bond fame at Alibaba\u2019s Singles\u2019 Day gala. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pZVdXxjBPm\">pic.twitter.com\/pZVdXxjBPm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gillian Wong \/ \u9ec4\u656c\u9f84 (@gillianwong) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gillianwong\/status\/664108644087128065\">November 10, 2015<\/a><\/p>\n<p><script charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, Singles Day has set its sights beyond mainland China and is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valuewalk.com\/2016\/11\/alibaba-taking-singles-day-shopping-spree-beyond-china\/\"> looking to go <\/a>global. International brands such as Walmart and Costco are already offering steep discounts for the event and Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore have have been gearing up this past week.<\/p>\n<p id=\"docs-internal-guid-9df506fc-4da5-29d0-45ba-df0982b09393\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-594877ba-518f-77cb-c374-e8aee2c4894f\">Last year, Alibaba dialed it up with a five-hour-long star-studded live television gala featuring unlikely <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2016\/11\/01\/alibaba-kobe-bryant-katy-perry-singles-day\/\">celebrity appearances<\/a> and live tracking of sales. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to resist the allure of a good bargain, but long after the momentary thrill of an impulse purchase fades, the environmental impact lingers for years.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re already consuming and trashing goods at a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/kirsten-brodde\/trendy-now-trash-tomorrow_b_12228900.html\"> far higher rate<\/a> than our planet can handle. And as the \u2018world\u2019s factory\u2019, China\u2019s air, soil and waterways will bear the brunt of this vicious cycle.<\/p>\n<p>From air pollution to mining<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/business\/batteries\/graphite-mining-pollution-in-china\/\"> graphite for smartphones<\/a>, or toxic<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/shukwah-chung\/fast-fashion-is-drowning-_1_b_12023176.html\"> chemical dyes<\/a> polluting rivers, the goods we buy take an enormous environmental toll long before products have even hit the (virtual) shelves. Now, over half of China\u2019s groundwater is unfit for human contact \u2013 in parts of the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/apr\/12\/four-fifths-of-chinas-water-from-wells-unsafe-because-of-pollution\">this figure is as high as 80%;<\/a> and many of China\u2019s vital rivers are<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/1010437.shtml\"> battling<\/a> heavy metal pollution contributing to \u00a0the dying out of entire species.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"events-box big-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame\"><a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/^8BEF913960C034ED86D275CC2590B94F9E7E0B1B43FFA33253^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_epiEntryContent_ctl00_ctl04_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/ReSizes\/Large\/PageFiles\/299371\/%5E8BEF913960C034ED86D275CC2590B94F9E7E0B1B43FFA33253%5Epimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"events-content hidden-paragraph\"><span class=\"date\">10 November 2016<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.inggreen.com\/1711.html\">760 million orders<\/a>\u00a0were processed and delivered last Singles Day. That\u2019s 760 million separate items worth of plastic and paper packaging destined for the landfill, or worse, in our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2016\/jan\/19\/more-plastic-than-fish-in-the-sea-by-2050-warns-ellen-macarthur\">\u00a0oceans<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"events-box big-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\"><a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/^1B20DD56D87670CF305F9F6DFFA25F269DC105B6A8D64A0BEF^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_epiEntryContent_ctl00_ctl06_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/ReSizes\/Large\/PageFiles\/299371\/%5E1B20DD56D87670CF305F9F6DFFA25F269DC105B6A8D64A0BEF%5Epimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"hidden\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.38;\">The goods we consume have an ever-decreasing lifespan: from the first point of manufacturing to the moment the package lands on your doorstep, this entire process can take<a href=\"http:\/\/3g.163.com\/ntes\/special\/0034073A\/wechat_article.html?docid=B9EUK33D051484PE&amp;s=newsapp&amp;w=2&amp;f=wx\">\u00a0as little as 20 days.<\/a>\u00a0And the lifespan of our products after purchase is shrinking as well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent report shows that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkongfp.com\/2015\/11\/27\/buy-nothing-day-hongkongers-throw-out-around-1400-t-shirts-every-minute-says-greenpeace\/\"> Hong Kongers throw out<\/a> the equivalent of 1400 t-shirts a minute and waste<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/news\/blog\/were-spending-39-billion-on-clothes-we-barely\/blog\/57107\/\"> over USD 500 million a year on clothes<\/a> that respondents admitted they \u2018rarely\u2019 wear. In 2012,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2016\/09\/09\/old-clothes-fashion-waste-crisis-494824.html\"> 85% of clothes<\/a> ended up in America\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/why-trashing-old-clothes-is-so-bad-for-the-environment_us_57f408f1e4b015995f2b93cb\"> landfills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Of course we can recycle or donate, but those channels are already overloaded with our unwanted clothes. The recycling industry is struggling to keep up with the volume of clothing being sent its way and the process racks up huge energy costs for transportation and processing. In developing countries like Kenya, second hand clothes are<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2016\/09\/09\/old-clothes-fashion-waste-crisis-494824.html\"> so flooding local markets<\/a> that a ban on these imports is being considered.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-594877ba-5192-564a-f5b9-004394b26477\">Meanwhile, a huge portion of the 30 million tonnes of electronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development-professionals-network\/gallery\/2016\/oct\/18\/the-e-waste-reduce-waste-old-technology-mountains-in-pictures\">waste that is thrown out every year<\/a>, is now piling up in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development-professionals-network\/gallery\/2016\/oct\/18\/the-e-waste-reduce-waste-old-technology-mountains-in-pictures\"> China<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/health-environment\/article\/1977148\/hong-kong-becomes-dumping-ground-us-e-waste\"> Hong Kong<\/a>\u2019s e-waste dumping grounds. <\/span><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"events-box big-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\"><a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/PageFiles\/299371\/%5e7AD88E9FDD41D845C5C840022F4FF37516D5AEF36AD0F0E67C%5epimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_epiEntryContent_ctl00_ctl08_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/ReSizes\/Large\/PageFiles\/299371\/%5E7AD88E9FDD41D845C5C840022F4FF37516D5AEF36AD0F0E67C%5Epimgpsh_fullsize_distr.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The only solution is to reduce our levels of consumption.
