Victory for China&#8217;s Giant Pandas"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-content\">\n<div>2016 has kicked off with great news for Pandas!<span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f59c8815-33a6-3edf-b36c-8a041f971498\">Back in October, Greenpeace East Asia revealed that China\u2019s iconic Giant Pandas were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/news\/blog\/illegal-logging-panda\/blog\/54513\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">under threat<\/a> from rampant illegal logging in the world\u2019s largest panda habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" style=\"display: block; margin: 1em 40px !important 1em 40px !important;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u2018Loggers in China destroying parts of panda sanctuary\u2019 This must stop! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/panda?src=hash\">#panda<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/c8GcSkh4JM\">https:\/\/t.co\/c8GcSkh4JM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Q3lwliks0L\">pic.twitter.com\/Q3lwliks0L<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greenpeace East Asia (@GreenpeaceEAsia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenpeaceEAsia\/status\/657028692720226304\">October 22, 2015<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Following a 2-year-long investigation, we uncovered that a shocking 3,200 acres of pristine natural forest in the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries had been clear cut to make way for plantations of profitable timber, under the guise of \u2018forest reconstruction\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"events-box big-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\"><a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/65e5948b-65e5948b-gp0stpdhx_web_size_with_credit_line-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_epiEntryContent_ctl00_ctl02_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/2019\/11\/65e5948b-65e5948b-gp0stpdhx_web_size_with_credit_line-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>We knew this had to stop.<\/strong><br \/>\nWe demanded that the government close the loophole which leaves China\u2019s most famous and beloved animals at risk of destruction and \u00a0protect the beautiful place they inhabit.<br \/>\nAnd that\u2019s exactly what has happened.<br \/>\nJust days after we exposed the illegal logging, the Sichuan Forestry Bureau took action and launched their own investigation.<br \/>\nThe results have just come in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">23 cases were filed and 22 officials held accountable.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">A new regulation on \u2018forest reconstruction\u2019- the policy that allowed the illegal logging to go on unchecked- will be issued, ensuring that the loophole is closed and can\u2019t be exploited further.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">The Sichuan Forestry Bureau is now developing a strategy to make sure commercial deforestation doesn\u2019t impact the Giant Panda\u2019s habitat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is amazing news. But the fight isn\u2019t over.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Giant Pandas are protected for now, but the problem isn\u2019t contained in Sichuan. We previously discovered the same illegal logging happening in <span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f59c8815-34fc-066b-a04e-30ffbef3ac36\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinafile.com\/reporting-opinion\/environment\/heres-how-giant-chinese-forest-disappeared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zhejiang<\/a> <\/span>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/press\/releases\/forests\/2013\/yunnan-forests-primary-greenpeace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yunnan <\/a>Provinces. As it stands, <strong>a third of China\u2019s natural forests are at risk of the same fate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Sichuan authorities have responded and put a stop to the reckless destruction of precious, natural forest. Now it\u2019s time for the rest of the country to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to all of you for sharing the news and making this happen.
