{"id":68477,"date":"2025-11-13T09:57:54","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T01:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/?p=68477"},"modified":"2025-11-19T14:45:49","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T06:45:49","slug":"greenpeace-calls-on-toyota-to-stop-greenwashing-biofuel-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/press\/68477\/greenpeace-calls-on-toyota-to-stop-greenwashing-biofuel-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace calls on Toyota to stop greenwashing biofuel vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BEL\u00c9M, BRAZIL<\/strong> \u2014 As the world converges at COP30 to confront the climate crisis, Greenpeace has condemned Toyota\u2019s misleading promotion of biofuel-powered prototype vehicles as a decarbonisation solution, as it ignores mounting scientific consensus that biofuels are a false climate solution that endangers both people and the planet.[1]<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace joined with Climate Action Network (CAN)&nbsp; \u2014 representing over 1,900 civil society organisations worldwide \u2014 to reject the so-called \u201cBel\u00e9m 4x Pledge\u201d on biofuels, warning that expanding biofuel production threatens forests, food security, and climate goals \u2014 echoing growing scientific consensus that crop-based biofuels are a false solution to the energy and climate crises.[2]<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Mariko Shiohata, Climate and Energy Campaigner, Greenpeace Japan,&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201c<em>As one of the world\u2019s largest automakers, responsible for 1.5% of global emissions, Toyota is already lagging behind in electrifying its fleet. Greenpeace East Asia\u2019s recent report shows Toyota has not committed to setting a target to cut absolute emissions to align with the 1.5\u00b0C climate goal.<\/em>\u201d[3]<\/p>\n\n<p>Scientific studies project that by 2030, biofuels could emit<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>70 million tonnes more CO\u2082e per year than fossil fuels. Greenpeace East Asia\u2019s research finds that Toyota\u2019s battery electric vehicles produce only one-third of the lifetime use-phase emissions compared to internal combustion models. There is a global consensus that a complete transition to electrification is urgently needed. [4]<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Shiohata added:&nbsp;<\/strong><em>\u201cThere\u2019s no time for detours on electrification.
