We are NGO voices from across the globe, representing concerned citizens committed to holding corporations accountable for their actions. We are asking Hyundai to take responsibility for the impacts its business has on people and the planet, and to match its climate commitments with meaningful action.<\/p>\n\n

Hyundai Motor Group has been a partner of FIFA for more than two decades. Your sponsorship of the 2026 FIFA World Cup\u2014 reportedly valued at around US $300 million<\/a>\u2014makes Hyundai one of the most prominent corporate faces of the tournament. You have invested heavily in projecting an image of clean, green mobility with a vision centered on \u201cprogress for humanity\u201d. You have showcased your electric vehicles and spoken of a sustainable future. <\/p>\n\n

Yet the numbers tell a different story. Hyundai and Kia’s combined emissions are roughly comparable to those of Spain<\/a>\u2014approximately 250 million tonnes of CO\u2082-equivalent each year.<\/a> Of the 6.8 million vehicles you sell annually, electric vehicles account for only 7% of overall sales.<\/a> While Hyundai has invested millions in FIFA sponsorship and showcased EVs to global audiences, the overwhelming majority of vehicles you put on the road still burn fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n

Troubling reports from the Fair Steel Coalition<\/a>, Mighty Earth<\/a>, and Jobs to Move America<\/a> have also identified severe human rights, labor, and environmental abuses throughout your supply chain, tying Hyundai to documented use of child and prison labor, unsafe working conditions, and environmental degradation across the globe. The company\u2019s vision for progress for humanity must be rooted in preventing and addressing the devastating impacts of your supply chain, and ensuring that workers and communities actually benefit from your investments. <\/p>\n\n

Recent media coverage<\/a> of actions led by our coalition in Guadalajara prompted a response from Hyundai, but the company failed to address the specific allegations raised, instead relying on generic references to existing inadequate processes that fall short of demonstrating robust human rights and environmental due diligence.<\/p>\n\n

We are not asking you to be perfect. We are asking you to be honest\u2014to align your commitments with your actions.<\/p>\n\n

This year’s FIFA World Cup will be one of the most carbon-intensive tournaments in football history<\/a>, and it is backed by some of the world’s most polluting corporate sponsors. Climate experts have challenged FIFA after warnings that one in four World Cup matches could be played in dangerously hot conditions due to global warming. We are deeply concerned about the health and safety of athletes and fans alike. We are equally concerned that Hyundai is using this global stage to promote a green and humane image that is not matched by its business practices.<\/p>\n\n

We will not allow corporations to use this stage for sportswashing and portraying an image that they don\u2019t deserve to have. We believe that Hyundai can drive change away from exploitation and pollution to help us build toward true progress for humanity. We call on Hyundai Motor Group to:<\/p>\n\n

1. Commit publicly to a clear, time-bound phase-out plan of internal combustion engine vehicles in all global markets and accelerate your transition to 100% electric vehicle sales by 2030<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Clean up your supply chain<\/strong> by upholding human rights and environmental standards at every stage\u2014from critical mineral sourcing to manufacturing emissions, including carbon-intensive materials such as steel<\/strong>\u2014while ensuring benefits for workers and affected communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Ensure that your World Cup partnership reflects genuine climate leadership, not greenwashing<\/strong>, through transparent, independently verified emissions targets and measurable progress toward meeting them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Hyundai and Kia achieved a record combined market share of 11.3% in the United States in 2025. <\/a>The 2026 FIFA World Cup represents your single greatest opportunity to win hearts and minds in that market. We urge you to make that opportunity count\u2014not by advertising a clean and humane image, but by earning one through concrete commitments toward truly clean cars with a just supply chain.<\/p>\n\n
