It is particularly exciting for China’s biggest platform company to account for the climate impact of its users. While details are not yet clear, Alibaba has certainly set the standard for all platform companies to follow.

“There are a few emission sources that are missing from this first accounting, including purchased goods sold on Alibaba retail outlets and customers’ use of those goods. These omissions can lead to an imprecise counting of Alibaba’s scope three emissions. Alibaba’s ambition to tackle the climate crisis is commendable and should cover every inch of footprint to make the greatest potential impact.”

Ye Ruiqi, Greenpeace East Asia project manager, said:

“For China’s tech giants, Alibaba’s carbon commitment sets the tone for the industry moving forward. This is the standard investors will use to review its competitors, including Tencent, Baidu, Bytedance, and JD.com.
