15 June, 2022, TOYOTA CITY – At 8:50 am today Greenpeace Japan activists displayed a banner in front of Toyota Motor Corporation\u2019s Annual General Meeting that called on the company to stop producing fossil fuel cars and protect the climate.<\/p>\n\n

Daniel Read, Climate & Energy Campaigner at Greenpeace Japan, said:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAs the world\u2019s largest automotive company, Toyota must take real action to curb climate change. Based on Toyota\u2019s sales target, EVs will account for less than 40% of the company\u2019s average annual sales by 2030. This is far slower than what is needed to achieve Toyota\u2019s own 2050 net zero target and works against the Paris Agreement goal of a global 1.5 degree Celsius temperature increase. We need to see Toyota end the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030.

On a political level, Toyota has the power to urge the Japanese government to phase out coal. However, at present, Toyota is actively working against a progressive climate policy and is impeding Japan from taking more significant climate action.\u201d

Toyota received the lowest grade of any carmaker in Greenpeace\u2019s 2021 auto industry ranking<\/a>. Earlier this week, European pension funds voiced concern over<\/a> Toyota\u2019s slow EV transition and lobbying efforts against climate legislation.\u00a0
