During his campaign, President Yoon pledged to end the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2035, but two months into his term, he has yet to act on his promise. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/canada-ban-sale-new-fuel-powered-cars-light-trucks-2035-2021-06-29\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20220629-eu-agrees-to-ending-sales-of-combustion-engine-vehicles-by-2035\" target=\"_blank\">the EU<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/09\/23\/governor-newsom-announces-california-will-phase-out-gasoline-powered-cars-drastically-reduce-demand-for-fossil-fuel-in-californias-fight-against-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a> have all banned the sale of new combustion engine vehicles by 2035, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/09\/23\/norway-bans-gas-cars-in-2025-but-trends-point-toward-100-ev-sales-as-early-as-april\/\" target=\"_blank\">Norway<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-takes-historic-step-towards-net-zero-with-end-of-sale-of-new-petrol-and-diesel-cars-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\">the UK <\/a>have set even earlier targets. It reads: \u201c\uc724\uc11d\uc5f4 \ub300\ud1b5\ub839\ub2d8, \uc57d\uc18d\ud558\uc168\uc8e0? 2035\ub144 \uacbd\uc720\u00b7\ud718\ubc1c\uc720\ucc28 \ud310\ub9e4 \uae08\uc9c0,\u201d which can be translated as \u201cPresident Yoon, keep your promise. Ban diesel and gasoline cars by 2035.\u201d<br><br>President Yoon committed in his election pledge book to outlaw the new registration of combustion engine vehicles effective by 2035. If realized, Yoon\u2019s commitment would align South Korea\u2019s zero-emission vehicle transition with<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/pathway-to-critical-and-formidable-goal-of-net-zero-emissions-by-2050-is-narrow-but-brings-huge-benefits\" target=\"_blank\"> International Energy Agency (IEA) recommendations.<br><br><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/press\/7320\/auto-workers-favor-ban-on-new-ice-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\">A recent survey by<\/a> Greenpeace East Asia Seoul office and the Korean Metal Workers\u2019 Union (KMWU) found that 82% of auto workers in Korea support a ban on the sale of new combustion engine vehicles by 2035.<br><br>Since 2016, Greenpeace has been campaigning automakers Ford, Volkswagen, Daimler, and BMW, as well as governments around the world, to suspend the production of combustion engine vehicles and switch to zero-emission vehicles.<br><br>\u201cThe facts are clear. A rapid transition to zero-emission vehicles is necessary for Korea\u2019s auto industry to remain competitive internationally. The auto sector is our country\u2019s biggest export industry.
