A final vote has been postponed to November.<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"events-box middle-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame\">\n        <a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/d4cd0e67-d4cd0e67-stop-glifosato.jpg\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_Property3_ctl00_ctl02_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/d4cd0e67-d4cd0e67-stop-glifosato.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"border-width:0px;\"><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<div class=\"events-content no-title\">\n        <span class=\"date\"><\/span><br \/>\n        <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n            Glyphosate protest at the ministry of health in Rome\n        <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Reacting to the news,<strong> Greenpeace EU food policy director Franziska Achterberg<\/strong> said: <em>\u201cGlyphosate is the asbestos of our generation. It\u2019s everywhere and the dangers are known. The damage it causes to the environment and our health has been exposed. Monsanto\u2019s interference in the science has been exposed. Today the Commission failed for the fifth time in a row to get sufficient support from European governments to renew glyphosate\u2019s licence. The tables are turning and unless the Commission backs a ban, it will continue to fail.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>There is growing opposition to a renewal of glyphosate\u2019s licence. According to media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-vote-to-renew-glyphosate-for-10-years-fails\/?utm_content=buffer4f16a&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a><span>, since the last vote in 2016, four countries supporting a licence now oppose it (Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, Sweden) and four countries who abstained now oppose it (Austria, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg). Bulgaria has moved from abstaining to supporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Today, media reports indicate that ten countries said that they would vote against a ten-year renewal of the glyphosate licence (Belgium, Greece, Croatia, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Austria, Slovenia and Sweden), while two countries abstained (Germany and Portugal). Sixteen countries said they would vote in favour (Bulgaria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Spain, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Finland and the U.K.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The European Parliament has also called for a full glyphosate ban within five years, starting with a partial ban this year. In 2016 the Parliament had supported a new seven-year licence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Over one million people have signed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stopglyphosate.org\/\"><span>European citizen\u2019s initiative<\/span><\/a><span> calling for a glyphosate ban, while recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sumofus.org\/media\/new-glyphosate-polls-2017-en\"><span>polling<\/span><\/a><span> shows growing concern and overwhelming support for a ban across five EU countries (Germany, France, Italy, Portugal and Greece).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Since early 2016, the Commission has backed an unrestricted EU licence for glyphosate.
