{"id":1353,"date":"2017-12-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-12-10T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/uncategorized\/1353\/study-dangers-of-neonicotinoid-use-in-greenhouses\/"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:33:59","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:33:59","slug":"study-dangers-of-neonicotinoid-use-in-greenhouses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/1353\/study-dangers-of-neonicotinoid-use-in-greenhouses\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: dangers of neonicotinoid use in greenhouses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"leader\">\n\tWill the use of neonicotinoids in greenhouses continue to present a risk for bees and other organisms?<br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div class=\"events-box small-box left\">\n<div class=\"frame reset-padding\">\n        <a class=\"open-img EnlargeImage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/df88f093-df88f093-bumble-bee-on-flower_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ctl00_cphContentArea_Property3_ctl00_ctl02_Image1\" class=\"Thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/df88f093-df88f093-bumble-bee-on-flower_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"border-width:0px;\"><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<div class=\"hidden\">\n        <span class=\"date\"><\/span><br \/>\n        <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The European Commission has proposed a ban on three neonicotinoids \u2013 imidacloprid,<br \/>clothianidin and thiamethoxam (referred to as neonicotinoids hereafter) \u2013 on all crops with the\u00a0exception of crops grown in permanent greenhouses, \u201cwhere the crop stays its entire life cycle within\u00a0the greenhouse and is thus not replanted outside\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the definition of \u2018uses in permanent\u00a0greenhouses\u2019 is as follows: crops\/plants grown in a permanent walk-in, static, closed place for crop\u00a0production with a non-permeable translucent outer shell.<\/p>\n<p>EFSA concluded that foliar uses of these three neonicotinoid substances in greenhouses\u00a0constituted a \u201clow risk to honeybees, bumble bees and solitary bees\u201d for all exposure routes with the\u00a0exception of exposure of honeybees from residues in surface water which EFSA could not assess,\u00a0due to a lack of information. EFSA considered that no risk assessment was required for uses as\u00a0seed treatment and granules in greenhouses.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this review is to bring together literature on the uses of neonicotinoids in greenhouses\u00a0throughout the European Union and assess current knowledge on the potential exposure of bees\u00a0and other organisms. There is already an existing body of literature that describes the impacts of\u00a0exposure to neonicotinoids for bees, honeybees and many other organisms.
