The report exposes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/1631\/ipcc-eu-climate-change-kick-in-the-ass\/\">inadequacy of current European emission-reduction targets<\/a> to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/10\/70a0b40e-gp0stscup_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"Lignite Digger Near Hambach ForestRWE Bagger im Braunkohletagebau Hambach\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/10\/70a0b40e-gp0stscup_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/10\/70a0b40e-gp0stscup_web_size_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/10\/70a0b40e-gp0stscup_web_size_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/10\/70a0b40e-gp0stscup_web_size_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenpeace EU climate and energy policy director Tara Connolly<\/b> said:<i> \u201cIn the face of the overwhelming scientific evidence and this summer\u2019s extreme weather, European heads of government have collectively acknowledged the need for more action to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Climate change is already happening, but a strong political response can avoid a total breakdown affecting millions of people and wiping out entire ecosystems. High EU climate targets for 2030 and a commitment to a carbon-neutral Europe by 2040 can limit temperature rise and send a strong signal to the world that the EU means business.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>At a public session during a meeting of environment ministers in Luxembourg on 9 October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/1645\/15-governments-call-on-eu-to-up-its-game-in-wake-of-un-climate-report\/\">15 European environment ministers<\/a> called on the EU to increase its targets to cut carbon emissions in line with the recommendations of UN climate scientists [1].<\/p>\n<p>On 10 October, members of the European Parliament\u2019s environment committee called for the EU to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest and increase the EU 2030 climate target to meet the Paris Agreement. The full plenary of the Parliament is expected to vote on this resolution on Monday, 22 October.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is expected to release its draft long-term climate strategy for 2050 on 28 November, just ahead of a UN climate conference that will take place in Katowice, Poland, in December 2018.
