{"id":1706,"date":"2018-11-09T10:46:44","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T09:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/master.k8s.p4.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/?p=1706"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:33:45","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:33:45","slug":"governments-call-for-swift-eu-action-on-global-deforestation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/1706\/governments-call-for-swift-eu-action-on-global-deforestation\/","title":{"rendered":"Governments call for swift EU action on global deforestation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Brussels\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Seven European governments have ramped up pressure on the European Commission to deliver a long-awaited action plan by the end of the year to tackle global deforestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1709\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1709\" class=\"wp-image-1709 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/11\/680995be-matopiba-brazil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/11\/680995be-matopiba-brazil.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/11\/680995be-matopiba-brazil-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/11\/680995be-matopiba-brazil-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/11\/680995be-matopiba-brazil-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deforestation from agricultural expansion in the Matopiba region of Brazil<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mfvm.dk\/fileadmin\/user_upload\/MFVM\/Miljoe\/Letter_to_European_Commissioners_on_Deforestation.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dated 1\u00a0<\/span><span>November and signed by Danish environment minister <a href=\"https:\/\/mfvm.dk\/nyheder\/nyhed\/nyhed\/amsterdampartnerskab-til-eu-stop-skovrydningen\/?utm_campaign=amsterdampartnerskab-til-eu-stop-skovrydningen-&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=fvm_nyhedsmail\">Jakob Ellemann-Jensen<\/a> on behalf of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euandgvc.nl\/documents\/publications\/2015\/december\/7\/declarations\"><span>Amsterdam Declarations partnership<\/span><\/a><span>, which includes Denmark, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway. It calls on the Commission to release, <\/span><i><span>\u201cas soon as possible, a roadmap for the development, in the course of 2018, of an ambitious EU action plan on deforestation and forest degradation.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter follows a similar call by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/1548\/eu-parliament-halt-deforestation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Parliament<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in September, which demanded an action plan with regulation to tackle the EU\u2019s forest footprint. The Parliament highlighted the impact of the production and trade in animal and agricultural products &#8211; like beef or soy for animal feed &#8211; and the role of the financial sector as drivers of deforestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenpeace EU forest policy director S\u00e9bastien Risso<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWith every week that passes, the world is moving deeper into a major global species extinction and closer to devastating climate change. Strong measures to tackle Europe\u2019s footprint on the world\u2019s forests can play a major role in tackling these challenges. The European Commission should stop sitting on its hands and address these issues head on.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/1030\/commission-study-makes-pressing-case-for-eu-action-on-deforestation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commission-funded study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released in March recognised that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe EU is clearly part of the problem of global deforestation\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and laid out policy options, including new laws, that could form the basis of the future action plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace calls for the plan to include comprehensive measures to eliminate the EU&#8217;s impact on forests and to support global efforts to protect and restore them. It should contain new laws ensuring that neither products placed on the EU market, nor the financial sector, cause environmental and social impacts like deforestation, forest degradation or human rights violations.
