{"id":1812,"date":"2019-02-14T11:14:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T10:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/?p=1812"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:33:42","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:33:42","slug":"meps-slowly-turn-tide-factory-farms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/1812\/meps-slowly-turn-tide-factory-farms\/","title":{"rendered":"MEPs slowly turn tide against factory farms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Environment committee votes for <\/b><b>more funding for ecological farming, cuts for intensive animal farms<\/b><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Strasbourg\/Brussels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 The European Parliament\u2019s environment committee has voted to increase environmental and animal welfare protections under the EU\u2019s common agricultural policy (CAP), but the improvements are not yet sufficient to tackle the problem of factory farming, said Greenpeace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1813\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/02\/1d54ce36-gp0stqmx6_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/02\/1d54ce36-gp0stqmx6_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/02\/1d54ce36-gp0stqmx6_web_size_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/02\/1d54ce36-gp0stqmx6_web_size_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/02\/1d54ce36-gp0stqmx6_web_size_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MEPs voted to restrict funding for livestock farms that exceed a certain \u2018stocking density\u2019, to set targets to reduce overall stocking density and for new rules saying that farm animals must be able to lie down, stand up, extend their limbs and turn around. [1] The committee also voted to block national subsidies for large livestock facilities not respecting basic animal welfare principles. <\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenpeace EU agriculture policy director Marco Contiero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFactory farms wreck the countryside, heat the climate and put small farmers out of business, but MEPs put forward some solid plans that could start to change that. Study after study shows the immense damage factory farming does, so Europe\u2019s agricultural system must evolve. The <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agriculture committee must now listen to what science tells us is good for the planet, and help small farmers \u2013 make the CAP work for ecological farming, and end factory farming.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment committee also voted to increase CAP funding reserved for climate and environmental measures, devoting 40% of the rural development budget, instead of 30% as the European Commission had proposed, and 30% of the direct payment budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/1807\/71-eu-farmland-meat-dairy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that over 71% of the EU\u2019s farmland is used to feed livestock, and that 18-20% of the EU\u2019s total budget, through the CAP\u2019s payment system, is linked to the animal farming sector. Eurostat\u2019s own figures show that 72% of Europe\u2019s livestock is produced on the largest category of farms.<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Next steps for CAP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next CAP, which will cover the years 2021-2027, is being negotiated between national governments and the European Parliament. The European Parliament\u2019s agriculture committee will vote on the European Commission\u2019s proposed CAP reform on 6 or 7 March, and a vote in the Parliament\u2019s plenary session is planned in April.<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Notes:<\/b><br \/>\n<b>[1] <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A farm\u2019s \u2018stocking density\u2019 is the number of animals it raises per hectare, measured in standard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php\/Glossary:Livestock_unit_(LSU)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">livestock units<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
