Official motorcades passed the protesters as they unfurled a banner in the city of Sibiu reading: \u201cBROKEN CLIMATE, BROKEN FUTURE\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1995\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/05\/0c700f7a-greenpeace-sibiuu-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/05\/0c700f7a-greenpeace-sibiuu-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/05\/0c700f7a-greenpeace-sibiuu-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/05\/0c700f7a-greenpeace-sibiuu-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/05\/0c700f7a-greenpeace-sibiuu-2048x1073.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/05\/0c700f7a-greenpeace-sibiuu-510x267.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With scientists warning that the window to avoid extreme climate chaos is closing fast and European efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions still insufficient, the protesters called on European leaders to make climate action a top priority and to increase the EU\u2019s climate targets in line with the Paris climate agreement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenpeace EU climate policy adviser Sebastian Mang<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople across Europe are sounding the alarm because they know we cannot have a bright future without a stable climate. European leaders can no longer pretend they are providing stability and prosperity without tackling the climate emergency. But for most leaders, responding to the collapse of humanity\u2019s life support system is barely on the radar. If they want a peaceful and prosperous future, they must build a fossil-free economy that protects nature and benefits everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The heads of European governments are in Sibiu to discuss the priorities for the EU in the coming years, with the fight against climate change not expected to feature prominently. They are aiming to reach an agreement on a \u201clong-term\u201d climate target at another EU summit on 20-21 June in Brussels. The European Commission has suggested the EU should reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several EU governments, including France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal and Luxembourg believe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/climate-strategy-2050\/news\/germany-poland-snub-eu-appeal-for-greater-climate-ambition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate action must be a cornerstone of the EU\u2019s strategic agenda for 2019-2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and want the EU to commit to deeper emission cuts by 2030 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest. Other EU countries, such as Germany, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, oppose an urgent revision of greenhouse gas reduction targets. Current greenhouse gas reduction pledges would result in over 3\u00b0C of global warming and devastating impacts. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have a chance of keeping global warming to 1.5\u00b0C and stop climate breakdown, Greenpeace is calling on the EU to achieve total decarbonisation by 2040 and to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/1718\/media-briefing-eus-last-chance-to-tackle-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cut greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
