The letter is addressed to the presidents of the EU&#8217;s three main institutions ahead of a meeting next week in Brussels, where EU and Mercosur foreign ministers aim to complete the negotiations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Jair Bolsonaro became Brazil\u2019s president on 1 January 2019, his government has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jan\/02\/brazil-jair-bolsonaro-amazon-rainforest-protections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismantled environmental protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reporterbrasil.org.br\/2019\/02\/sob-ataque-pos-eleicao-terras-indigenas-estao-desprotegidas-com-desmonte-da-funai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tolerated incursions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by armed invaders on Indigenous Peoples\u2019 lands, and overseen a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jun\/04\/deforestation-of-brazilian-amazon-surges-to-record-high-bolsonaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dramatic rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of deforestation rates in the Amazon, undermining years of progress to protect it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU serves as a huge market for Brazilian soy and beef, the production of which drives deforestation and human rights abuses in Brazil on a vast scale. In 2017, 42% of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/beefandlamb.ahdb.org.uk\/market-intelligence-news\/italian-beef-imports-increase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> EU beef imports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iatp.org\/the-rise-of-big-meat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazilian transnational corporations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have been heavily subsidized by the Brazilian government. The world\u2019s largest meat processor, JBS, emitted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iatp.org\/emissions-impossible\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more greenhouse gases in 2016 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/pdfscache\/1180.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netherlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/forests\/pdf\/1.%20Report%20analysis%20of%20impact.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2013 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the European Commission also found that soy expansion was responsible for nearly half of the deforestation embedded in products imported into the EU.
