{"id":2200,"date":"2019-10-01T17:30:08","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T15:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/?p=2200"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:33:34","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:33:34","slug":"eu-farming-boss-less-better-meat-dairy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/2200\/eu-farming-boss-less-better-meat-dairy\/","title":{"rendered":"Incoming EU farming boss must back less and better meat and dairy, Greenpeace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Brussels \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nominee to be the next European agriculture commissioner, Janusz Wojciechowski of Poland, must steer EU farm policy away from industrial production of meat and dairy to keep his promises to protect small farmers and the environment, Greenpeace has said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/67fd24a6-gp0sts8mt-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/67fd24a6-gp0sts8mt-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/67fd24a6-gp0sts8mt-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/67fd24a6-gp0sts8mt-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/67fd24a6-gp0sts8mt-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2018\/08\/67fd24a6-gp0sts8mt.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answering questions from members of the European Parliament\u2019s agriculture committee, commissioner-designate Wojciechowski said he would do whatever was possible to ensure that the EU\u2019s common agricultural policy (CAP) becomes more environmentally and climate-friendly, and that he is in favour of cutting support for intensive farming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 23 October, the European Parliament\u2019s plenary session is expected to vote on whether to accept or reject the entire European Commission team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenpeace EU agriculture policy director Marco Contiero <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said:<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSmall-scale farms across Europe are being eaten up by factory farms, just as the Amazon is being devoured to grow more feed for overcrowded European animals. If Mr Wojciechowski wants to protect family farms and nature, and reducing farming\u2019s contribution to climate breakdown, he must steer EU farming policy towards producing less and better meat and dairy. The EU Parliament\u2019s environment committee has already made some serious proposals for how the CAP can protect nature, and support small farmers \u2013 we hope Commissioner Wojciechowski will throw his weight behind these.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Parliament\u2019s environment committee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/1812\/meps-slowly-turn-tide-factory-farms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted on the reform of the CAP in February<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, approving cuts to subsidies for factory farms, and backing the introduction of higher environmental and animal welfare criteria, as well as increased funding for environmentally friendly farming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, big farms have been getting bigger, and smaller family farms have been disappearing. Livestock production has increased, while the total number of livestock farms <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Agri-environmental_indicator_-_livestock_patterns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell by 2.9 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly a third, between 2005 and 2013. A staggering 72% of all European livestock products now come from Europe\u2019s largest and most environmentally destructive category of farms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal farming alone accounts for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23504717\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12-17% of the EU\u2019s total greenhouse gas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emissions. Farm animals emit greenhouse gases themselves and are often fed commodities like soy, which are linked to deforestation and habitat destruction, and have a major climate footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace is calling for a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/livestock_vision\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% reduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in global meat and dairy production by 2050, to protect the climate, environment and public health.
