Leaders from the Brazilian Amazon, Cerrado, Pantanal and Mata Atl\u00e2ntica regions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1kmUE_EM5pSISsxm0TWMCN5BZEkJrAUNI?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demonstrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outside the European Commission headquarters with a six-metre flaming tree trunk, displaying a banner reading: \u201cEUROPE BUYING \u2013 FORESTS BURNING\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/11\/b129068b-greenpeace-amazon-5-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/11\/b129068b-greenpeace-amazon-5-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/11\/b129068b-greenpeace-amazon-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/11\/b129068b-greenpeace-amazon-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/11\/b129068b-greenpeace-amazon-5-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2019\/11\/b129068b-greenpeace-amazon-5.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delegation will meet Mr Timmermans on 6 November, only days after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/02\/brazilian-forest-guardian-killed-by-illegal-loggers-in-ambush\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paulo Paulino Guajajara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an indigenous forest defender, was shot dead by illegal loggers in Brazil&#8217;s Amazon region. Mr Guajajara, who was related to one of the members of the delegation, is the latest victim in a spate of attacks on indigenous leaders and environmentalists since Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro loosened environmental protections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1kmUE_EM5pSISsxm0TWMCN5BZEkJrAUNI?usp=sharing\"><b>Print-quality photos of the demonstration free to use here<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Nara Bar\u00e9, general coordinator of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEurope shares responsibility for the bloodshed and forest destruction in Brazil. European consumption increases the pressure on land around the world, and this is the consequence. The EU must pass new laws to keep products that encourage this violence and environmental destruction deforestation off the European market. We are asking EU governments to suspend the Mercosur trade deal until we can be sure that human rights, the forests and the environment are protected.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The indigenous leaders are travelling around Europe as part of the tour <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sangue Ind\u00edgena: Nenhuma Gota A Mais<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Indigenous blood: not a single drop more) organised by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articula\u00e7\u00e3o dos Povos Ind\u00edgenas do Brasil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (APIB, Association of Brazil&#8217;s Indigenous Peoples).<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/02\/brazilian-forest-guardian-killed-by-illegal-loggers-in-ambush\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 1 November<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Paulo Paulino Guajajara, an indigenous forest defender, was shot dead by illegal loggers in Brazil&#8217;s Amazon region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Commission <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/forests\/eu_comm_2019.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is considering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what action it should take to address Europe\u2019s contribution to global deforestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 400 companies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsumergoodsforum.com\/initiatives\/environmental-sustainability\/key-projects\/deforestation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Consumer Goods Forum in 2010 that they would end their contributions to deforestation by 2020 \u2013 none of them have met that goal.
