The Commission now has their backing to put forward new legislation to ensure EU consumption of products such as soy, beef and palm oil will not drive further forest destruction.<\/p>\n\n<p>The ministers are highly likely to welcome the Commission\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/2130\/deforestation-action-plan-does-little-to-tackle-impact-of-eu-trade-dogma-greenpeace\/\">earlier communication<\/a> on action against deforestation and request an \u201cassessment of additional demand side regulatory and non-regulatory measures\u201d as well as proposals to tackle EU\u2019s global forest footprint. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace agriculture and forests campaigner Sini Er\u00e4j\u00e4\u00e4<\/strong> said: \u201c<em>For years, pledges by companies and governments have failed to halt deforestation. The Commission\u2019s own analysis shows what the problem is and EU countries are now backing enforceable action.
