Brussels, 7 April 2020<\/strong> \u2013 Heated discussions are expected at today\u2019s videoconference between EU finance ministers, as they debate proposals for a coordinated economic response to the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace EU democracy policy adviser Ariadna Rodrigo <\/strong>said: \u201cCovid-19 knows no borders and neither should Europe\u2019s response. Solidarity between countries is essential for a response that looks after everyone according to their need and that rebuilds communities and wellbeing, including through EU debt mutualisation. Now is the time to translate the values enshrined in the EU treaties into a caring response that provides the necessary support, and reinforce the chances for a just and green recovery.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Yesterday, two European Commissioners called for long-term EU financial bonds<\/a>. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is calling for the EU budget to be turned into a \u201cMarshall Plan for Europe<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n

European governments are split into two camps: one in favour of so-called Eurobonds, led by Spain and Italy, and one against, led by the Netherlands, Germany and Austria.<\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace, along with many other civil society organisations, is calling for any EU support or stimulus package to help build a fairer and more resilient society, based on democratic principles and delivering better healthcare, employment standards, social and environmental protections. Economists confirm<\/a> that crises are moments where governments can shape the economy to better deliver both for people and planet. <\/p>\n\n

The current Covid-19 crisis and the resulting economic downturn demonstrates the profound need for the social and economic transition to be both just and green, enabling societies to be resilient in the face of crisis.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n
