Tomorrow 15 May, MEPs will decide what they want in the EU\u2019s Recovery Fund and seven-year budget ahead of the European Commission\u2019s much awaited proposal next week.<br><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/04\/0088ebf7-202004-covid-19-lockdown-berlin.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/04\/0088ebf7-202004-covid-19-lockdown-berlin.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/04\/0088ebf7-202004-covid-19-lockdown-berlin-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/04\/0088ebf7-202004-covid-19-lockdown-berlin-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/04\/0088ebf7-202004-covid-19-lockdown-berlin-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><br>To date over 1.2 million people from across the world have joined campaigns at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=69e958b0b5&amp;e=876c432bbc\" target=\"_blank\">avaaz<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=d360aff5bc&amp;e=876c432bbc\" target=\"_blank\">WeMove Europe<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=3504568ac6&amp;e=876c432bbc\" target=\"_blank\">SumOfUs<\/a>, supporting the call for a bold, green recovery in Europe.\u00a0<br><br>Alongside, the Green 10 coalition of environmental organisations have organised <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=f65831bf41&amp;e=876c432bbc\" target=\"_blank\">an appeal<\/a> urging lawmakers to design a green, healthy and just recovery with a fund <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=e2c3b2188c&amp;e=876c432bbc\" target=\"_blank\">investing hundreds of billions<\/a> into home renovations, scaling up renewable energy, restoring natural habitats, boosting public transport and zero-emission mobility, and greening agriculture.<br><br>The environmental groups have stressed that all recovery plans must put people\u2019s wellbeing at the heart of the crisis response, deliver social benefits and protect workers\u2019 rights through a \u2018just transition for all\u2019. The NGOs and petitioners warn against EU and national governments bailing out polluting industries involved in sectors such as gas, oil and coal, chemicals, cars and airlines. Any stimulus investments must be conditional on companies\u2019 alignment with social, environmental and climate objectives. The EU must improve the environmental safeguards of the next budget, dedicating at least 50% to climate and the environment and excluding all fossil fuel subsidies.<br><br><strong>Wendel Trio, director of Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe<\/strong>, said: <em>&#8220;The COVID-19 crisis teaches us that prevention is better than cure. Acting to prevent dangerous climate change is the best way to get Europe and the world out of this economic crisis in a way that protects citizens and economies from future disruptions. And an ambitious climate policy is a guarantee that the stimulus package will have the most value for its money. For the next EU budget that means no support to fossil fuels and spending plans that serve the transition to climate neutrality.&#8221;<\/em><br><br><strong>Ester Asin, director of the WWF European Policy Office<\/strong>, said: <em>\u201cWe\u2019ve heard a lot of lip service paid to a \u2018green recovery\u2019 lately, but now it\u2019s time for decision-makers to put their money where their mouth is. The current crisis is a stark reminder of how closely human and planetary health are interlinked &#8211; only together can people and nature thrive. A green recovery means restoring nature, protecting our environment, and accelerating the transition to a carbon-neutral and resilient economy. MEPs must lead the way.&#8221;<\/em><br><br><strong>William Todts, executive director at Transport &amp; Environment<\/strong>, said: <em>\u201cThis is Europe\u2019s moment of truth. We want the Commission to propose the biggest green stimulus plan the world has ever seen.
