MEPs ignored <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23VoteThisCAPdown&amp;src=typeahead_click\">mounting pressure<\/a> from NGOs and youth climate activists for them to vote down the policy, which Greenpeace described as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/45172\/eu-parliament-signs-death-sentence-for-small-farms-and-nature-greenpeace\/\"><em>\u201ca death sentence for small farms and nature\u201d<\/em><\/a>, and ask the European Commission to start over.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/10\/fd777906-gp0sttccj_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/10\/fd777906-gp0sttccj_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/10\/fd777906-gp0sttccj_web_size_with_credit_line-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/10\/fd777906-gp0sttccj_web_size_with_credit_line-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2020\/10\/fd777906-gp0sttccj_web_size_with_credit_line-453x340.jpg 453w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU agriculture policy director Marco Contiero<\/strong> said: <em>\u201cThe EU farm plan, as it stands, represents only the interests of the biggest industrial producers and the richest land-owners. Ordinary farmers and nature have been cast aside by a handful of powerful MEPs with conflicts of interest, and the EU\u2019s climate goals jeopardised. Billions of euro of public money will drive farming further into climate catastrophe, unless the European Commission scraps this plan and starts fresh.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>The farming policy approved by the European Parliament is not in line with the goals of the European Green Deal, nor the EU\u2019s \u2018farm to fork\u2019 food plan and biodiversity strategy published earlier this year, said Greenpeace. The EU agriculture commissioner said that some of the amendments agreed <em>\u201cdo not share our ambition for a greener and fairer CAP\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The proposed common agricultural policy makes no effort to limit spending on industrial animal farming and would prohibit national governments from introducing higher environmental standards that farmers in their country would have to meet to get public subsidies. The plan would scale down current requirements to leave space for nature on land farmed or to protect carbon rich peatlands and grasslands. The proposal would also set maximum national spending limits on some environmental programmes.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Scrap the CAP\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is calling on the European Commission to withdraw its proposal for the common agricultural policy, restarting the legislative process.
