As companies who have damaged their public image by ignoring the pollution they cause, International Women\u2019s Day looks like a chance for them to gain some brownie points.<\/p>\n\n<p>Many tweet about the career options women have in their industry:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/ycVm3BmOJbME_qzKpmnWWupvYaRpmf_okH_UGlnlRSf0gxf3woA047J8UbQhgBnqeV_YZUVnBGnsmB2IC_EtuF9Cmnt8T4DKOLwBCh5fnkEC3jKfu-svHcvU3YTdNitDz7qmMJz6\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Or they focus on the gender gap in research and technology:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/2nHDoYGaR5oGTtMejPJvCnb1lW_ab30Y3uRAABdIX2TLOr_KMsRvk6x_Gq5E6rY7eTmYmzmIRfII6GQoY-fIGXKhx8wYVy0rh3_I6H0kiodqyIfvvlabeCXDlU9JwkYoqjrC_2Xo\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Others run competitions, or sponsor cultural events like film launches:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/aBxBSqJ0wa3WIoomUcktGa0kbbxvvGFjoQXvDUKNKoX8pdmnEqqsS8hze_vDstgfu-Y5IyZSj-s8qzHGKYPpJN4min8lNA2ei5OZh7-X41b2FusLNLlj6WSPHSIGAsK0SeEKqVkh\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Fossil fuel companies have for years tried \u2018greenwashing\u2019 \u2013 presenting themselves as concerned about the environment, saying fossil gas is a climate-friendly fuel, or investing a tiny percentage of their money in renewables to pretend they are part of the energy transition. Many of them even just change their logos or branding to look more \u2018green\u2019. So they have had some practice in appearing to care about the social impacts of their business, and now they have seen International Women\u2019s Day as a chance to do some \u2018genderwashing\u2019 of their brands.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/ZYQR9fPBNUB_yTZ8kn8lv2nDTk27qZeqkhm6BEfGymbABGbw2eRdBVN9N829iDPc7VxsvTVWCOI2dgtvtjFZujLde_Ckyn0kgJppXTuI_l0mBWeLYqFs9IJb_AU6jCUc9DDe9dTm\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But the day-to-day business of these corporations \u2013 extracting, selling and burning fossil fuels \u2013 causes harm to women by polluting the environment and driving climate breakdown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The extraction, transport and processing of fossil fuels has disastrous effects on the local environment. When there are spills and other accidents, the damage is multiplied.<\/p>\n\n<p>When disaster strikes, it almost never strikes equally. People in the Global South, or disadvantaged communities in a given country, often bear the brunt of climate breakdown or air and water pollution.
