Greenpeace and 20 other environmental and press-freedom organisations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/05\/20210429-NGO-Letter-on-Eni-and-SLAPPs.pdf\">wrote to Commissioner Jourov\u00e1<\/a>, asking for an EU law to protect journalists and activists from legal harassment for their work.<\/p>\n\n<p>In our letter we are highlighting a case of legal harassment against a newspaper in Italy. The oil company Eni is suing the newspaper <em>Il Fatto Quotidiano<\/em> for 29 articles they published, and demanding \u20ac350,000 in damages.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/05\/0459c4bb-gp0stonos_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/05\/0459c4bb-gp0stonos_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/05\/0459c4bb-gp0stonos_web_size_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/05\/0459c4bb-gp0stonos_web_size_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/05\/0459c4bb-gp0stonos_web_size_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>This is a classic case of a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) &#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/democracy-europe\/4059\/how-the-rich-and-powerful-use-legal-tactics-to-shut-critics-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly a problem<\/a> for journalists and activists in the EU.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU climate and energy campaigner Silvia Pastorelli<\/strong> said: <em>&#8220;Journalists play an essential role in exposing wrongdoing and holding polluting corporations to account.
