You can\u2019t sidestep the rules of the game, just like you can\u2019t ignore climate science. But this whole package is based on a target that is too low, doesn\u2019t stand up to science, and won\u2019t stop the destruction of our planet\u2019s life-support systems. For all the hype, many policies won\u2019t kick in for ten years or more, like <em>new polluting cars still being sold up to 2035<\/em>, while others will actually fuel the fire, like labelling the burning of trees as renewable energy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>As the planet continues to face deadly heatwaves, raging wildfires and devastating storms and floods, the EU\u2019s 55% target for net cuts to emissions by 2030 falls well short of what <a href=\"https:\/\/climateactiontracker.org\/climate-target-update-tracker\/eu\/\">science requires<\/a> to restrict global heating to 1.5\u00b0C, and prevent the collapse of nature, the economy and wider society.<\/p>\n\n<p>Among the top announcements today:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Commission wants to restrict sales of new <strong>cars <\/strong>to &#8220;emissions-free&#8221; vehicles from 2035, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/45007\/new-roadmap-to-decarbonise-european-transport-by-2040\/\">too late to limit global heating to 1.5\u00b0C<\/a>.<\/li><li>The Commission also wants to set up a new carbon market for road <strong>transport<\/strong>, triggering fears that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jul\/13\/von-der-leyen-pledges-fuel-poverty-help-amid-emissions-trading-concerns\">rising energy and fuel prices<\/a> could harm poorer households, with no guarantee of meaningful emission cuts.<\/li><li>A new tax on jet fuel<strong> kerosene<\/strong> could only be fully implemented in 2033 and be riddled with exemptions.<\/li><li>Polluting industries are likely to continue to get free emission allowances under the EU\u2019s <strong>carbon market<\/strong> until 2035, linked to the phase-in of the carbon border adjustment mechanism (see below).<\/li><li><strong>Hydrogen <\/strong>will also be eligible for free allowances under the EU&#8217;s carbon market, including when it is produced using unspecified \u201clow carbon\u201d technologies.<\/li><li>A <strong>carbon border tax<\/strong> on steel and iron, aluminum, cement, electricity and fertilisers to combat \u2018carbon leakage\u2019 that would co-exist for a transition period with the EU carbon market.
