The new calculations come ahead of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/rates-bonds\/eu-phase-out-russian-gas-oil-coal-imports-leaders-draft-2022-03-07\/\">meeting of EU leaders<\/a> in Versailles on Thursday and Friday to discuss ways to reduce the EU\u2019s dependence on energy imports from Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/03\/efed0806-gp1sx0aq_medium_res_with_credit_line-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46072\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/03\/efed0806-gp1sx0aq_medium_res_with_credit_line-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/03\/efed0806-gp1sx0aq_medium_res_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/03\/efed0806-gp1sx0aq_medium_res_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/03\/efed0806-gp1sx0aq_medium_res_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/03\/efed0806-gp1sx0aq_medium_res_with_credit_line.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Short-haul flights that already have a train connection consume about 4.35 million tonnes of kerosene in a regular pre-pandemic year, and emit the equivalent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2021\/10\/135ec803-getontrack-gp-briefing-en-final.pdf\">23.4 million tonnes<\/a> of CO2. Russia is the largest single supplier of oil to the EU, accounting for around <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/cache\/infographs\/energy\/bloc-2c.html#carouselControls?lang=en\">27%<\/a> of oil imports to the bloc, meaning one flight in every four is powered by Russian oil. At average market prices for Russian oil, the amount spent on oil-based jet fuel for flights that have a train connection amounts to around <a href=\"https:\/\/greenpeace.at\/assets\/uploads\/pdf\/presse\/GreenpeaceCEE_briefing_aviation_oil_imports_Ukraine_crisis.pdf\">\u20ac2 billion annually<\/a>, though the figure is likely to be even higher given the current soaring oil prices.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Herwig Schuster, spokesperson for Greenpeace EU Mobility For All campaign, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cEurope\u2019s transport system is addicted to oil \u2013 fueling bloody conflict and the climate crisis. Using less energy is the quickest and easiest way to stop funding Putin and to tackle climate breakdown. Cutting short-haul flights where there\u2019s a decent rail alternative is low-hanging fruit that will immediately bring oil use down.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is calling for a ban on short-haul flights in the EU, where a train connection exists, as a measure to immediately reduce Europe\u2019s dependency on crude oil that is driving conflict and climate breakdown.
