But switching fossil fuel supplies from Russia to Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia, while shielding&nbsp;Russian uranium exports to Europe from sanctions, will not bring peace and security. Fossil fuels have a history of being connected with conflict and war \u2013 wherever they come from, governments must phase them out as quickly as possible, not look for new suppliers. Our political leaders need to get behind a massive rollout of home insulation, renewables, and clean public transport, while protecting the most vulnerable in society and ensuring farmers in Europe produce food for people, not feed for industrial meat factories.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>The EU continues to bankroll the war in Ukraine with imports of Russian gas, oil and coal. For oil imports alone, the EU and the UK send almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/20220303_russian_oil_in_the_EU.pdf\">\u20ac200 million to Russia every single day<\/a>. Europe\u2019s nuclear energy industry also relies on Russia for about a quarter of its enriched uranium supply, with Russian state energy company Rosatom \u2013 so far exempted from sanctions \u2013 invested in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macaubusiness.com\/greenpeace-urges-french-nuclear-firms-to-cut-russia-ties\/\">construction, maintenance and radioactive waste disposal<\/a> for European reactors in several EU countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>So far, despite strong rhetoric from politicians and a string of EU sanctions, almost none of this trade has been disrupted.<\/p>\n\n<p>Instead, courted by Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/azerbaijan\">Azerbaijan\u2019s regime<\/a> is set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/azerbaijan-set-boost-gas-supply-europe-this-year-double-capacity-future-2022-02-23\/\">double its gas exports<\/a> in the coming years, while several EU governments have pledged to develop liquified fossil gas capacity for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-20\/germany-reaches-deal-to-buy-qatari-gas-in-pivot-from-russia\">imports from Qatar<\/a> or the United States, which would keep Europe dependent on this fossil fuel for decades.<\/p>\n\n<p>As EU governments consider new oil sanctions and eye up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2022\/03\/saudi-arabia-mass-execution-of-81-men-shows-urgent-need-to-abolish-the-death-penalty\/\">Saudi Arabia\u2019s absolute monarchy<\/a> as an alternative supplier, energy giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/20\/saudi-aramco-says-annual-profit-more-than-doubled-in-2021\">Saudi Aramco announced it has doubled profits<\/a> on the back of the energy crisis. Meanwhile, EU governments have announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/discover\/taxpayers-face-e9bn-bill-for-fuel-tax-cuts-skewed-towards-the-rich-study-finds\/\">fuel tax cuts<\/a>, which disproportionately benefit the wealthiest in society and extend our addiction to fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/46105\/reduce-eu-meat-factory-farming-to-replace-ukraines-wheat\/\">European Commission<\/a> has also announced \u20ac500 million in financial aid to farmers facing disruption in animal feed, mainly used in factory farms, and synthetic fertiliser supplies due to the war, and specific assistance for the pork sector to keep prices high.
