{"id":46272,"date":"2022-06-14T12:19:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T10:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/?p=46272"},"modified":"2022-06-14T12:22:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T10:22:01","slug":"taxonomy-putin-and-polluters-lose-key-vote-in-eu-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46272\/taxonomy-putin-and-polluters-lose-key-vote-in-eu-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Taxonomy: Putin and polluters lose key vote in EU Parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Brussels, 14 June 2022<\/strong> \u2013 Two key European Parliament committees have voted to cut off a vital flow of cash for Putin\u2019s war machine by rejecting the European Commission\u2019s controversial plan to give fossil gas and nuclear energy a sustainable label under the EU\u2019s green investment guidelines, known as taxonomy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2022\/06\/1e0523c3-taxonomy-putin-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>76 MEPs from the economic affairs and environment committees voted against greenwashing gas and nuclear, with 62 votes in favour and 4 abstentions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The joint committee vote comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/InnaSovsun\/status\/1534443929126457345\">Ukrainian MP Inna Sovsun<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/energytransition.in.ua\/zvernennia-ukrainy-do-deputativ-yevropeyskoho-parlamentu-vykliuchyty-haz-ta-iadernu-z-taksonomii-yes-appeal-from-ukraine-to-members-of-the-european-parliamen-make-eu-taxonomy-free-from-gas-and-nuclear\/\">Ukrainian environmental groups<\/a> warned MEPs that adding gas and nuclear energy to the EU taxonomy would be a \u201cgift\u201d to Putin, funding the invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Before the vote took place, Greenpeace EU volunteers demonstrated outside the European Parliament building in Brussels, holding props depicting Russian president Vladimir Putin, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, the heads of Gazprom and Rosatom, and lobbyists for the gas and nuclear industries as nesting Russian dolls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.greenpeace.org\/collection\/27MDHUH4YULR\"><strong>HIGH QUALITY PHOTO AND VIDEO OF THE ACTIVITY AVAILABLE FOR MEDIA HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU sustainable finance campaigner Ariadna Rodrigo <\/strong>said:<em> \u201cMEPs stood with Ukraine today by voting to stop feeding Putin\u2019s war machine with more money and inflaming the climate and nature crisis. After more than 100 days of this devastating war, the European Parliament must now once and for all reject the greenwashing of fossil gas and nuclear energy in July. Do not give this shameful gift to Putin and his lobbyists.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace France published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46227\/russian-doll-gas-nuclear-lobbying-taxonomy-eu\/\">a detailed investigation<\/a> in May exposing how much money Russian companies connected to the regime stand to gain from the EU Commission\u2019s plans to greenwash gas and nuclear, and how they used subsidiaries and lobbyists to influence the decision to add gas and nuclear to the EU taxonomy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The joint committees\u2019 motion to reject the EU Commission\u2019s plan to greenwash gas and nuclear will now be voted on by the European Parliament in a plenary session between 4 and 7 July.
