At a time when so much effort is going into supporting Ukraine, why is the nuclear industry left free to funnel money into Russia\u2019s war chest?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Rosatom oversees Russia\u2019s nuclear weapons programme, in addition to selling nuclear fuel and services globally, including to many European countries, from Hungary to France. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/sanctions-nuclear-energy-would-harm-hungarys-interests-minister-says-2023-02-22\/\">Hungary<\/a> is the most vocal government blocking the sanctions as the government is dependent on Rosatom to build its new Paks II plant, but other countries that depend on Rosatom for their nuclear industry have opposed the sanctions in the past, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/news\/France-Hungary-Against-Sanctions-on-Russian-Nuclear-Energy-20230214-0021.html\">France<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ukraine-president-volodymyr-zelenskyy-eu-leaders-sanctions-russia-nuclear-energy-giant-zaporizhzhia\/\">Bulgaria and Slovakia<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Russia\u2019s president Vladimir Putin has asked Rosatom to be ready to test a nuclear weapon, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/putin-russia-suspends-participation-last-remaining-nuclear-treaty-with-us-2023-02-21\/\">a speech<\/a> where he announced Russia\u2019s exit from a nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged several times for the EU to sanction the Russian nuclear industry and most recently the heads of Rosatom.
