Brussels<\/strong> \u2013 A year after Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian nuclear weapons and energy company, Rosatom, and its leading employees have escaped the EU\u2019s list of sanctions, according to the latest update released today.<\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace EU sustainable finance campaigner Ariadna Rodrigo<\/strong> said: \u201cPoliticians like Macron love to fly the Ukrainian flag and pose for photos with Zelenskyy, but then look the other way when Ukraine asks them to cut the European nuclear industry’s ties to the Kremlin. At a time when so much effort is going into supporting Ukraine, why is the nuclear industry left free to funnel money into Russia\u2019s war chest?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Rosatom oversees Russia\u2019s nuclear weapons programme, in addition to selling nuclear fuel and services globally, including to many European countries, from Hungary to France. Hungary<\/a> is the most vocal government blocking the sanctions as the government is dependent on Rosatom to build its new Paks II plant, but other countries that depend on Rosatom for their nuclear industry have opposed the sanctions in the past, including France<\/a>, Bulgaria and Slovakia<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Russia\u2019s president Vladimir Putin has asked Rosatom to be ready to test a nuclear weapon, in a speech<\/a> where he announced Russia\u2019s exit from a nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty.<\/p>\n\n

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged several times for the EU to sanction the Russian nuclear industry and most recently the heads of Rosatom. The European Commission ruled this out<\/a> after resistance from several EU governments with domestic nuclear industries. <\/p>\n\n
