Despite growing scientific evidence that glyphosate may cause cancer and other health problems and could also be poisonous to bees, this is the second time that EFSA has given it the green light, after paving the way for market re-approval already in 2015.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is calling on the European Commission and national governments to reject glyphosate market re-approval.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU pesticides campaigner Eva Corral<\/strong> said:<em> &#8220;For years the evidence of glyphosate&#8217;s toxicity for people and the environment has been stacking up, but the European food safety authority has once again decided to sweep it under the carpet. The Commission and EU governments have a duty to protect people and nature: they must reject its re-approval and put European farming on a sustainable course.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/citizens-initiative\/initiatives\/details\/2017\/000002\/ban-glyphosate-and-protect-people-and-environment-toxic-pesticides_en\">over a million people<\/a> called on the European Commission to ban glyphosate, and the European Parliament called for it to be phased out by the end of 2022. Though glyphosate\u2019s market approval expired in December 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/commission-to-temporarily-re-approve-glyphosate-without-member-states-go-ahead\/\">the European Commission extended this deadline<\/a> to give EFSA time to complete its assessment.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Human health and nature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In 2015, the World Health Organization\u2019s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MonographVolume112-1.pdf\">probably carcinogenic to humans<\/a>. Since then, more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9145961\/\">independent research<\/a> has shed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9101768\/\">more light<\/a> to glyphosate\u2019s negative health effects for people.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969721004654#\">Recent research<\/a> has also shown that glyphosate can be considered toxic to bees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Research scandals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Between<strong> <\/strong>2012 and 2015, public authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/left.eu\/content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Expertise-RAR-Glyphosat-2018-01-11-1.pdf\">plagiarised<\/a> assessments by glyphosate producer Monsanto (now Bayer) of the independent scientific literature on glyphosate\u2019s health impacts, presenting them as their own conclusions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2017, investigative reporters revealed that Monsanto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanpressprize.com\/article\/monsanto-papers\/\">ghost wrote research<\/a> to promote glyphosate as safe, and to attack UN cancer agency IARC for classifying it as probably carcinogenic to humans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2020, two researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research at the Medical University of Vienna evaluated the industry studies on glyphosate genotoxicity submitted to EU authorities for the current renewal process, concluding that the vast majority <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/s3.sumofus.org\/images\/Evaluation_scientific_quality_2021_glyphosate_re-evaluation.pdf\">were \u201cnot reliable\u201d or only \u201cpartially reliable<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Based on EFSA\u2019s risk assessment, the European Commission will make a proposal, which should then be discussed and voted on by national government representatives in the EU Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Contacts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Eva Corral, Greenpeace EU GMO campaigner<\/strong>: +32 479 60 12 89, <a href=\"mailto:eva.corral@greenpeace.org\">eva.corral@greenpeace.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace EU press desk<\/strong>: +32 (0)2 274 1911, <a href=\"mailto:pressdesk.eu@greenpeace.org\">pressdesk.eu@greenpeace.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>For breaking news and comment on EU affairs: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/GreenpeaceEU\">www.twitter.com\/GreenpeaceEU<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning network that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace.
