{"id":46858,"date":"2023-12-07T09:57:06","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T08:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/?p=46858"},"modified":"2023-12-07T09:58:43","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T08:58:43","slug":"factsheet-comparing-holiday-season-travel-prices-by-train-and-plane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46858\/factsheet-comparing-holiday-season-travel-prices-by-train-and-plane\/","title":{"rendered":"Factsheet: Comparing holiday season travel prices by train and plane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/c9a18393-trains-v-planes-cover-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/c9a18393-trains-v-planes-cover-image.jpg 794w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/c9a18393-trains-v-planes-cover-image-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/c9a18393-trains-v-planes-cover-image-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/c9a18393-trains-v-planes-cover-image-510x334.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/ea52d94e-2023-12-07-winter-travel-price-comparison-brussels.pdf\"><strong>Read the factsheet here (PDF)<\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n\n<p>With the exception of a certain sleigh pulled by reindeer, the train is the climate-friendliest way to travel long distances in Europe. <strong>Rail travel <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/rail-and-waterborne-transport\"><strong>produces 80% less carbon pollution<\/strong><\/a><strong> per person per kilometre than flying on average.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulletin.be\/brussels-airport-expects-half-million-passengers-during-christmas-holidays\">Hundreds of thousands of people<\/a> travel from Brussels to other European cities to visit loved ones every holiday season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>We chose three dates in December and compared the cost of travelling by train and plane from Brussels to 20 destinations in the rest of Europe on those dates. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/ea52d94e-2023-12-07-winter-travel-price-comparison-brussels.pdf\">The results<\/a> (PDF) paint a picture of a transport system that is still heavily skewed in favour of flying (in planes, not sleighs).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>On average, <strong>the price of a ticket to travel by train between Brussels and the 20 destinations we analysed was three times more than making the same journey by plane.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6-510x287.png 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/2023\/12\/eef22952-brussels-twitter-post-6.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Only four of these destinations had a direct train service from Brussels<\/strong>, while all twenty had direct flights at least three days a week.
